This should be in the P2P software forum just above this one.

Anyhow, have you checked out the afterdawn guide on uTorrent:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/utorrent_guide_page_3.cfm

12mbps is pretty good speed, but Virgin does not like bittorrent and interferes with it as much as any ISP: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs#United_Kingdom

So you should enable encryption.
If you are having trouble uploading, you should also set peer.lazy_bitfield at Options>Preferences>Advanced to true.

And it looks like they are going to get tougher

Are you using PeerGuardian, or a similar IP blocker?

VM are experimenting with traffic shaping and sandvine technology. I have found a way around it but it isn't legal as it involves tampering with their closest network machine.
Once your number hits their lists as a p2p user expect all kinds of shennagins from them. They have been cutting my max up speed to zero and messing around with the max connections allowed.. just like you can with a router. I have to run rolling ports to keep one step ahaed. In an attempt to stop my legal p2p activities they have tried delaying packet transfers also.. my pings vary wildly.. so now my datapackets seem to originate from somewhere else.(as I said.. that's illegal)

Virgin are on the brink of committing criminal offenses of invasion of privacy and interception of private communications (illegal wiretapping) against their customers which we should be protected from under the European data protection and privacy laws, at the behest of the UK govt and BPI. Watch your back!!
