Does adding a ram card to your computer or laptop increase the ram or replace it?
For example my computer has 1 gb ram and I buy a 1gb ram card, does that just replace my old ram or add more totaling up to 2 gbs?

depends on how many slots you have left on your computer.

ex) you computer has 3 ram slots, 2 are taken up by 512mb rams, and when you add 1gb to the open slot, it now has a total of 2gb.

but if your simply REPLACING the ram, then it doesnt increase. well, now that i noticed, you said you were adding ram, not replacing, so then yes, it will increase the ram.

Indeed, it's as logical as you'd think - add a stick and you get more memory, replace a stick and you only gain if the stick you replace the old one with is a higher capacity. Note that there are limits, RAM sticks can only be so big (1GB for DDR1, 2GB usually for DDR2), there are only so many slots you can fill (2 for laptops and small form factor PCs, 4 for normal PCs), and 32-bit operating systems can only read 4GB of total memory, and that goes for system RAM and graphics.

im not sure where, but i remember reading that someone said the 32-bit OS or 64-bit has a limit, but the computer will still optimize the gb of ram used. like it wont read it when you run a test but still uses all the ram, even though theres no real reason why would want to go over 3gb or more.

That may be true, but it's not something that would affect me as I've never managed to reach 3GB of RAM usage...
