Hi, i have a problem with my binatone carrera a350, which is the x350 with europe on it.I assumed the europe maps would be preloaded but italy an the scandanavian countries come on a cd.I followed the instructions to copy the maps on the cd to an SD card(not included) which i did.The problem is the sat. nav. wont recognise the new sd card, I tried a different sd card but with the same result.I brought the sat nav back to the shop and they replaced it with a new sat nav....same result. It works fine with the SD card that came loaded with the other countries. Can anyone help???

likely your card is formatted in NTFS file system. You should reformat it using either FAT or FAT32 and it should work.

Hi, thanks for your reply but I have formatted both the SD cards I used in both Fat and FAT 32 format with the same result, the sat nav doesn't recognise either card???? I have sent the cards I used and the cd the maps came on back to binatone carrera and will post their prognosis.

Is that possible? Any chance of a few pointers as to how to do it? (I think I know where to get the software)

Hi Gents apologies for the late reply.

You are going to need a PDA with tomtom 6 already installed on it.. your use the files located on the pda to transfer across to the binatone carrera.

ok it is hard for me to explain on here so please bare with me - for sure it works, I will warn you first to backup your old binatone navigator files onto your pc first and also sometimes it has been known for the tomtom software to crash on the binatone so make sure you back them up to.

From experience my binatone carrera has crashed twice and sometimes i've had to reload the tomtom files on it again.. and if anyone fixes that then let me know.

Ok here goes.

So you've backed up your folders - the ResidentFlash folder with the navi files on is the most important to back up.

you need to have the a version of tomtom 6 which you have installed onto a PDA - the reason for this is simple - the folders on the pda under program files and the flash files replaces the MobileNavigator files inside the binatone carrera, along with some other files you have stored somewhere on your pda..

1st - make sure you have all the relevant tomtom folders on the SD Card - which includes your maps as per normal with your PDA.

2nd copy the tomtom files from you pda program files and any files in mydocuments and the my flash folder on the pda to your pc ready for transfer onto the binatone carrera:

on you binatone carrera under the Resident Flash folder, there is a MobileNavigator folder create these folders inside the MobileNavigator folder if they dont exist already.
Files needed: tomtom
contacts
itn
logging
my flash disk
TomTom
Voices

Also from you pc or pda copy these folder into the MobileNavigator folder (make sure they dont go into any other folder just directly under the MobileNavigator folder);

Tomtom.exe
tomtom navigator
ttmobile
navigator
data
CurrentMap

Now rename the tomtom.exe to MobileNavigator.exe <-- like this

Now copy the relevant files into the folders we put under the MobileNavigator folder:

1. copy the file from the itn folder on your pda (temp file) into
the itn folder under mobilenavigator
2. copy the file ttmobile and ttnavigator from your pda flash into
the my flash disk on the binatone under mobilenavigator folder.
3. and in the tomtom folder under the MobileNavigator folder on the
binatone there needs to be these files from you pda:

TTToday
GB_plus_major_roads_of_WE-65186fa1

4. and now copy all your tomtom voices that you require from the pda
to voices folder under the mobilenavigator folder on the binatone.

Right now for the last bit - make a copy of the ttmobile file in the flash folder and drop it into the resident flash folder which shows the mbn and MobileNavigator folders.

Dont worry about any of the gpspara files - just leave them alone they will keep coming back if you delete them because there on the embedded into the windows ce backup system.

Right now re-boot your binatone hit the navigator and it should work.. sometimes you get the tomtom sign up and it doesnt work - you just power it off and on from the back - plug in the charger cable and reboot and hit the button again and it should come on.. thats how it works on mine anyway.

I hope this helps give you the idea of how I did it, if not please except my apologies - the navigator can be reset with the folders you backed up.

best regards
and any questions let me know.

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but I thought I would add some more info here as (as far as Google is concerned anyway) this is the only place TomTom on a Binatone A350/X350 is mentioned. My experience installing TomTom 7 was a little different to mwaiter1's, so here are some alternate instructions:

You will need:
1) A Binatone Carrera A350/X350.
2) A USB cable to connect it to your PC.
3) Microsoft ActiveSync (free download from MS) or the equivalent for Vista.
4) A version of TomTom Navigator that has been patched to work with PNAs - currently, 7.910 (9185) is the latest version.
5) Software that can extract files from WinCE cab files - I used 'WinCE CAB Manager' from OCP.
6) The PNA patch.
7) A file called note_prj.dll - this was included in the PNA patch in my case.
8) At least one map. The version of TomTom mentioned above will work with the current 815.xxxx version maps.
9) The map/meta keygen.

Instructions:
Install ActiveSync, turn on your A350/X350 (no need to enter the navigation software) and connect it to your PC. In 'My Computer', go to 'Mobile Device' (this shows the files on the A350/X350) and open the ResidentFlash folder. As mentioned previously, it would be a very good idea to back up this folder to somewhere on your PC in case you need to revert to the Binatone software.

After you have done so, delete everything in ResidentFlash.

TomTom is typically distributed as a cab file, which is not directly usable on the A350/X350, so the files must be manually extracted. Open the cab file with WinCE CAB Manager, go to Cabinet->Files->Extract, and select a location to extract the files to.

Go to where you extracted the files. Rename [INSTALLDIR] to MobileNavigator. Overwrite any files here with those from the PNA patch, or you will get a memory error when starting TomTom. Rename 'TomTom Navigator.exe' to MobileNavigator.exe. If note_prj.dll was not in the PNA patch files, copy this into the MobileNavigator folder as well - this allows TomTom to read maps on SD cards.

Copy the MobileNavigator folder to your A350/X350, inside the ResidentFlash folder. You can also put the folder containing your map inside ResidentFlash as well if it is small enough (around 180MB), or if not you must write this to an SD card and insert it into the A350/X350. When you extracted TomTom using CAB Manager there may also have been files in a 'Windows' folder - copy these to the 'Windows' folder within 'Mobile Device' in 'My Computer'. You can delete the 'TomTom' folder that has 'TTToday' inside it, this is not required.

Now disconnect the A350/X350, turn it off using the switch at the back, and turn it back on again. Select 'Navigation' from the main screen, and TomTom should start. You may be asked some set up questions such as language. Eventually, you should see an error message saying the map has not been activated. Turn off the A350/X350 again, turn it back on, and then reconnect it to the PC.

Within ResidentFlash (and on the SD card, if you are using one) will now be a file called ttnavigator.bif. If you open this with Notepad, you will find a 10 digit 'DeviceUniqueID' mentioned - this is the code you need for the map/meta key generator.

The keygen should come with its own instructions; if you are using an 815.xxxx map be sure to select the navcore 8 option when generating the key file (.dct). When generated, copy this to the map folder. You will also need to generate .dct files for the speed camera add on if you have it, and also place these in the map folder.

Finally, if you are in the UK or the Netherlands you will want to download the postal code fix from TomTom. If not installed automatically, these files should be placed inside a folder called 'zip' in the ResidentFlash folder on your A350/X350.

Disconnect your A350/X350 from the PC, and select 'Navigation' from the main screen to start TomTom. It should start successfully this time.

In the left panel it may say 'No GPS device'. If so, go to the menu (tap on the map) and go to 'Change preferences', tap on the right arrow a few times and when it appears go to 'Show GPS status'. Tap 'configure', select 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' and set the baud rate to maximum (115200), and tap on 'COM7' then 'done'. After a little while, TomTom should find your location.

All done :)
Hope these instructions were helpful to someone. If you want to use TomTom Home, you must unfortunately use the old 1.5x version as the 2.x versions do not seem to recognise non-TomTom devices.

I´ve tried to put tomtom on the x350, but directly in the ResidentFlash dir. It´s completely gone now, made a backup first before starting, but a bad one. Does anybody know where to get the files back, that belongs in this dir ?

First of all, many thanks to XTC2.

Here is the problem. I've got A350 and successfully installed Tomtom navigator 7 but my 1gb micro SD cards seem not to work. Only the one came with is fine.

Anybody tried a micro SD card? or any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Hi england98, as mentioned above make sure the SD card is formatted with FAT, not NTFS. I have a cheap, generic 1 GB card working, and another cheap 2 GB card that worked fine before as well.

It's worth noting that the UK map will fit on the internal memory anyway, so no need to use an SD card for that map. I have that one on my internal memory, and western europe on SD.

I'm not sure, but with at least some WinCE devices (like the Binatone), the battery hit from using an SD card can be quite large, so I prefer to only use the SD when I have to.

Hi XTC2,

My A350 only has 38kb left for ResidentFlash folder and 1MB for internal memory. I've checked with Tomtom home 1.5 and the internal memory has some folders and I have post code fix in zip folder which is 9MB. I don't know what is taking so much space but I don't want to touch the internal files in case all the syetem breaks down.

Maybe, my A350 is originally WE 1GB one and SD card came with it, so UK&ROI binatone software is still within the internal memory ?? I have no idea about binatone software.

Anyway, I tried to use 1GB micro SD with adapter with no luck. I tried everything but it doesn't seem to work. Do you think a normal SD card only will work not micro SD?

I just got a comfirmation from Tomtom that UK maps in WE 1GB is the same as UK&ROI maps.

^^^Thanks so much, I finally got my A350 loaded up with TT :)

Note: I had to use the Win CE 4.2 version of TT that is on various forums. With the other versions (I assume CE 5.0) I kept getting memory errors.

http://www.gpsunderground.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2524

I still get them now and then but rebooting the binatone fixes it ;)

Tap 'configure', select 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' and set the baud rate to maximum (115200), and tap on 'COM7' then 'done'. After a little while, TomTom should find your location.

All done :)
Hope these instructions were helpful to someone. If you want to use TomTom Home, you must unfortunately use the old 1.5x version as the 2.x versions do not seem to recognise non-TomTom devices.

^^^Thanks so much, I finally got my A350 loaded up with TT :)

Note: I had to use the Win CE 4.2 version of TT that is on various forums. With the other versions (I assume CE 5.0) I kept getting memory errors.

I still get them now and then but rebooting the binatone fixes it ;)

Hello

I have followed the above instructions installing Tomtom on the Binatone B350. The Tomtom is coming up and managed to set preferences but it is saying 'No Maps'. Unfortunately the Resident Flash cannot accommodate the Maps, instead I have put them on the SD Card. The software has been installed using the MS ActiveSync as well as the Maps. I have formatted the SD Card using the FAT option in windows. I have also copied all the files to the SD Card and left the ResidentFlash empty, this did not help. Could you please help me to solve this problem.

Many Thanks
TB

Sorry to bump an old thread but I thought this was worth posting. I followed XTC2's instructions and got it working, but there are some irregularities, so I thought I'd add my findings for you all.

I tried adding the extracted files from the cab that belong in the "Windows" directory to the Windows directory on the device but after powering down the machine, they are removed. It would seem that this area of the device is RAM and thus volatile. I copied the files to the "MobileNavigator" folder instead and it seems to work but there is still the possibility that it doesn't use the files at all, I haven't checked.

Upon power up I tap "Navigation" on the main screen and like many others have reported the TomTom splash screen shows then disappears, going back to the Binatone screen at which point tapping it again will do nothing.

To get TomTom to load I power on the machine like normal and get to the main screen. From here I tap "Navigation" and then tap and hold the grey area of the background above "Menu" in quick succesion before the splaash screen appears. This stops the splash screen from appearing. I keep holding on the grey area for about 5 seconds and then let go. I wait a few more seconds and TomTom's driving view appears with the "Welcome to TomTom NAVIGATOR!" message at the top. I can now use TomTom normally.

It would appear that after the TomTom splash screen disappears, it returns focus to the Binatone menu even though TomTom is still running in the background. I don't know whether TomTom is at fault here or the Binatone software. Using this method still loads the splash screen, it just doesn't show it, that's why there is a slight pause between letting go of the screen and TomTom appearing.

It would be interesting if we could find a way to disable the Binatone menu and load the software directly. There must be an executable somewhere that it loads and maybe we can just switch it for the TomTom executable??

One last thing, for those who have tried the explorer.exe method and can't find the exe to put on the SD card, simply created a new text document on your desktop and rename it to explorer.exe (make sure file types aren't hidden in explorer first). This file tells the machine to load explorer, it isn't the file that is actually loaded.

All of this was found on an X350 2nd Edition UK&ROI.

To find the pna version of TomTom along with the cab files for the original installers, I refer you to another forum.

Look towards the bottom of the first post on that page, and you'll find a link to it. If you are getting the cab installer as well, you require one of the qvga versions.

As for a simpler tutorial, follow XTC2's instructions, but instead of putting the MobileExplorer folder in ResidentFlash, just put it on an SD card along with the files that are supposed to go in to the Windows folder. If the SD card is in the slot when powered up, it will load TomTom instead of Binatone Navigator.

Hope that helps.
