Do you have any symptoms that point to a virus attack? If your computer just all of a sudden started to slow down with no symptoms of virus, my advice is to check your hard drive DMA settings.

I had a similar problem happen to me where my system was taking a long time to bootup/shutdown and opening programs. I traced the problem to my c: drive was set to "PIO" instead of "DMA". the setting was greyed out and wouldn't let me change it back.

In your computer go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager/IDE/SATA controllers. Make sure none of your hard drives/cdroms are set to "PIO" .

I was ready to reload windows xp, when I found the way to change the hard drive setting back to "DMA", it requires registry editing, but it works. My computer is now as fast as ever.

I would check that first, to see if maybe if your DMA settings got changed around.

Thanks heaps for your reply and help.

I havent really experienced any behaviour that may be virus related (only little things like sometimes in ie the mouse/cursor will flicker like crazy). Suddenly my PC began to run slow so I did all the usual cleaning, defrag, reg clean etc and it hasnt seemed to help so I thought my next step would be to post a log here.

I took a look at your suggestion, but Im not really confident enough to play around with driver settings etc.

Im kind of at a loss as to what to do.

I would still recommend that you check your IDE/SATA controller settings, it's a quick check. By checking it, you won't be making any permanent changes. If any of the settings are set to "PIO", then that could be your problem.

That is something that will definitely slowdown your computer. I would rule it out as a problem and then concetrate on other possible causes.
