DVD/HDD Recorder won't finalize some disks

I always record my shows and movies to HDD. Then I transfer them to individual DVDs. Most of the time this works well.

However, sometimes after dubbing to DVD, I go to finalize the disc and the option is "grayed out" and not available. I used to think that the DVDs had been automatically finalized, but they don't play on other DVD players and my iMac sees the disks as blank.

This doesn't happen all the time, just once in a while especially when dubbing a title at a slower speed where I leave it to record overnight and go to finalize it the next morning.
I also only use the same brand of DVD-R disks.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? The customer service center at Magnavox was not too helpful.

PS - Are there any solutions for finalizing the disks using iDVD or another Mac program?
