Hi, I just bought a new notebook and it came with Windows Vista, I know XP is better but I'm sticking with Vista. My problem is that with a TV connected Vista becomes stupid when I close the lid. It decides that the TV (which is the secondary monitor) is now the primary monitor moving the desktop over (messing up the sizes of all my applications). Does anyone know if it is possible to stop this stupidity?

Probably not.. when you close the lid it sets the notebook screen into suspend/hibernate mode within the hardware. You could try disabling those options, but you would then need to remember to manually enter hibernate mode to turn the screen off forever after.

Don't know if there is any possibility of damage hardware wise in disabling these settings either, so at your own risk.

I always turn of any state changes in plugged in mode as it drives me nuts. I like to leave the computer on and not have to use the backlight all the time, so those modes arn't an issue, that was the first thing I did. So shutting the lid doesn't affect the state of the computer in terms of hibernate or sleep.

But does the backlight shut off when you close the lid? (I know.. that's a little like "does the fridge light go out when you shut the door::lol::) Notebooks are a little different in that the hardware can be wired to use these modes regardless of OS settings .. It has been driving us nuts over at Linux-Questions also...

Sorry.. as things stand that was my best guess..

a shot in the dark.. how about having a look in the bios?

The screen goes off, it has a lid switch like any other notebook. It is Vista (or maybe the nVidia driver) changing the screens as it doen't do this in bios mode.

I guess my screen just turns itself off when closed and the driver sees this as the screen is disconnected, Windows makes its disconnect sound when I close the lid. :(
