is it possible to remove or soften background noise from a recorded sample?? It is currently in *wav format... but can be converted

Several wave editors have noise removal tools. I'd try Adobe Audition (fully functional trial version). To get good results you need a short passage with noise only (no audible content you want to keep), create a noise profile and use it for noise reduction. It's always a trade of between how much noise you want to remove and how many artifacts introduced by it you want to accept. Happy trying ... (Audition has a decent help file that should answer most questions).
