Toshiba D-R410 Video Problem

I am having a problem with the screen image when using the Toshiba D-R410 recorder in that instead of seeing the full screen it becomes, what looks like, a wide screen image with bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

I had saved some high definition shows on my DVR which I intended to copy to a DVD using the subject recorder but with the current problem the image would be distorted.

My setup is: the cable from the cable company comes into the DVR and one of the sets of outputs from the DVR - which are RCA connections, white, red and yellow - go to the recorder and then from the recorder to the TV via an HDMI cable.

Even when I'm not recording and I'm viewing a high definition show (which looks fine on the TV via component video cables) when I switch to the recorder output - with the recorder on - I get the wide screen image instead of the full screen.

I've been in contact with Toshiba, my cable company and most recently the manufacturer of the DVR (which is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR.) So far I haven't had any luck finding out what I'm doing wrong or what can be done to correct the problem.

I'm thinking about returning the recorder to the store as I still have about 3 weeks in which to do that with no penalty and consider buying another recorder but I'm not sure that would help.
