I Can't believe it's a DRM thing. I Have VISTA and Never Have any problems Ripping, Shrinking or Burning. That said, Your Friend needs to explain and give more info. Just saying I can't burn because I have Vista doesn't tell anyone anything. It would be Helpful if we knew:

What programs she has installed.
Are they Installed Correctly in Admin are they run in compat mode
What is her proceedure for the Copy process.
Where does the proceedure fail.
How old is her Burner?
What is the Make and model.
What Media does she use. (speed, Brand Name)
If she could post a log of a failed burn, that would be very helpful.

You could also set the programs to run their compatability with XP. Right click the Icon go to properties, click the compatibility tab and then select the OS you want the program to run with.

No encryption, already compressed? Vista should be able to handle it.ImgBurn would be the best route to go.

She can't re-rip your backups:

Can she play original dvds on it?

Was she able to re-rip your backups before Vista?

Was Vista loaded in a new pc,or onto her current XP-upgraded to Vista pc?

I give a 90% chance that it's a compatability issue with her drive.

When it comes to reading OPB-"other people's backups",dvd-rw drives can be just as picky as stand alone players. Classic symptom: no disc error, when your backup is slapped into her dvd-rw drive. You can try other programs, but likely get the same no disc error. Her drive does not like your backups. There's something about your backups that her dvd-rw doesn't like.

Here's how I'd try to fix it,but it'll have to be performed with your future backups:

1) Look at the format of blank media that you are using. If your dvd-rw drive has bitsetting capability to booktype, then booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. Hands down, booktyped backups will have the highest compatability rate. If your drive doesn't have bitsetting capability, then switch to the opposite format for your friend's burner to rip. This is the usual fix,but let's say Bubba has no trouble re-ripping your current backups. He may have trouble after you switch to the opposite format. It's hard to control what drives that'll read your backups, unless you can booktype.

If your friend switched computers, therefore she has a totally different dvd-rw drive than before vista, most likely her new dvd-rw drive favors the opposite format than what her older dvd-rw drive did.

2) Media quality: Again, some dvd-rw drives can be as picky as stand alone players. Certain MID coded media may give them fits. Crap media can also do a number on all dvd drives. Use quality media and you'll have a lot less headaches now,and later.

Pick up some RW discs.RW can be even trickier to read, but may save you from having extra copies laying around. It'll also give you another format to try on her pc.

3) Burn half the rated speed.Ex:16x media,burn at 8x.
Crap media, burn slower. Quality media, you can speed it up.

4) Burner quality: Not all dvd-rw drives are alike. There's some great drives, decent drives, and pc's of crap drives. The compatability rates can vary. The booktyping drives will help solve this issue. People run into these compatability issues when they switch burners. All of a sudden, their blank media won't work as well as it did before, even though it's the same brand name, format, speed rate, and even the same batch of discs.

Example: My HP640 using Hitachi maxell media: 50% compatability rate with either plus or dash format. Any of my Benqs or Plextor,95% compatability rate after they're booktyped.

Look for the latest firmware version for your drive and update it.It controls the writing strategy-which tells your burner how to properly burn that specific blank media.

5) Slapping any sticker labels on them? That'll do a number on drives.

6) Burn engines: Picky drives can tell a difference between burn engines. Try another burn engine on a backup, and test on her Vista PC.ImgBurn is very quick with re-ripping backups and non encrypted DL backups. Faster than most programs and less strain on a pc.It can also set the booktype to dvd-rom if your drive has that capability.

After trying the above and her drive doesn't recognize your backups,Try another drive in it.Another Dvd-rom,Dvd-rw,or Combo cd-rw/dvd-rom drive. You may even take your burner out and swap it out for hers. Decent burners from newegg can be had for well under $40 in a worst case scenario.

If she can get a drive to recognize your backups, then lets hope she doesn't encounter any CRC errors. That's another issue when it comes to OPB,then all the above can apply for that as well.

Why all this talk about decrypter and stuff? It's a waste of time because.... OP says these are films he has already successfully ripped and burned. His friend is trying to copy the copies. If a drive isn't reading the disks there is an obvious problem.. As I posted before It's most likely a crap drive in the vista machine.. OEM's are installing total s-ite these days. Bargain bin faulty by design liteon/toshiba/hitachi rebranded junk..

We have about 20 threads about these crappy drives that are being fitted in fista machines by oem bulders.

Most drives that get slapped into any new pc is usually junk. Most of the hardware is also junk. You practically gotta gut them out the first day you open up the box. Low wattage/crappy power supplies, crap ram/minimal ram, crap drives, few cooling fans.

A lot of these new pcs don't come with backup discs. You gotta back up your OS and Drivers yourself, with that crappy burner.

You may be ok if you plan on playing your backups on your own dvd player/s,pc. But when passing backups around, that's where the real issues show up with low quality drives.

good point Jan I see alot of nOObs in here with problems backing up DVDS and alot of the time its a combo between crappy box systems HP,Dell etc. and the drives they put in them.

I have a custom build machine (per my sig) and never have trouble backing up any movie out.

So nOObs don't expect much from a box system if you want to backup and burn DVDs invest in a good custom built machine

Usually a decent branded burner does the trick. I buy Pioneer 112d's for £22 a shot and replace anything unbranded (especially if it is HS-HL-DT or similar) on sight ;) I can buy those for £32 a hundred. Speaks for itself.. Now I wonder if a clay pidgeon launcher will fire them.. **ponders**

The rest of the box doesn't usually seem too bad, apart from vista that is.. beef up the PSU and maybe a better cpu heatsink/fan with some REAL thermal grease, not that horrid sticky pad that turns to something you find stuck forever to concrete..
Then have fun with the "win-modem" syndrome for drivers.. lots of that going on again.
Booting linux on one of these OEM machines (HP/Dell especially) is a real eye opener.

I forgot.. fista is riddled with all kinds of strange drm.. I couldn't burn a bin/cue cd image with it no matter what I did or program I tried to use.. I even tried roxio FFS!!! (invalid file format) Thinking I was going to be in for a struggle with a corrupt toc or something I took the file home.. and just burned it straight off.. Next call was the same machine refusing to burn iso's in any form after a system update from the manufacturers. Also killed convertx, nero7 and dbpoweramp, though azureus survived just fine.
Complete reinstall (from my hookey vista beta disk .. the old M$ beta2 release from 2 years ago??.. I don't have an authentic one as I don't officially support it..) cured that. Restore from within vista just carried on the update situation... avoid vista. It's not nice, and doesn't play nice.
Sorry about the OT.. Just observations from the ongoing fun with a neighbours vista box HP machine.

BTW.. I normally use an old dell optiplex 110 clamshell (p3-600) with debian sarge for dvd backups to save tying up a good machine. Takes it's own sweet time but does a fine job.

on my game machine i have vista/xp just for games, i can burn an ISO just fine in my XP, in vista for whatever the reason it comes out a beautiful coaster.....OEM computers usually have burners that come from the OEM itself like dell, unfortunately people often think that in order for a burner to work with their PC it must be manufactured by the OEM which is a huge mistake as dell on particular makes such terrible drives there not even valuable enough to use as a paper weight.....

Try some verbatim or sony -r.

Make sure it can play for both of you, in all your drives.

Keep the burn speed 8x.

I wouldn't bother with TDK and Memorex took a dump by unloading a ton of MBI's in their +16x. If that memorex spindle says Made in India, then they're are MBI and some burners will have trouble with them. My benq 1640 and 1620 fairs ok with MBI. My 1650 hates them. Memorex used to be made in Taiwan, by Ricohjpn, and were decent.

What specific error is it on her pc when she trys to rip it?

Will her drive recognize your backups,so it can be ripped to HD?

Does it fail during the rip-CRC error?

Does it successfully rip, fails during the beginning, middle,or end of burn?
Does it actually burn, but won't play in any of her drives?
