How do I play backups?

I actually have a few questions about playing backups on the PS2. I just got a PS2 for the first time (someone gave it to me) and its the older kind. Well I know there are mod chips for the PS2 and there is Swap Magic, but what I am trying to find out is if there is a way to play backups without the use of swap magic/AR/Gameshark or a mod chip. Why is there a need for a boot disk to begin with, or better yet why couldn't I just download free software and burn it to make my own boot disk. If there is no way around spending money to be able to play backups, then what is the cheapest route? Also, I have a pack of 50 DVD-R's from Office Depot (Office Depot brand). Are these good CD's to use? Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't see a Tutorial and I don't think the search thing works to well.

Well there is a sticky on media so you should look into that. I would just stick with Verbatim DVDs myself.

Swap Magic is used to "trick" the PS2 into thinking that the burnt disc is legit and not just a backup. If you chip your PS2 then there is no need for swapping so you can just directly insert the disc at startup.
