Z310a purchased USA for use in UK help with unlocking please

I purchased my phone in the USA (from a SE dealer) and was assured this would work in the UK. Long email dialogue with SE who don't seem to want to know. I have found the Imei number but not a carrier (which unlocking services want). This was a new phone. I inserted my sim card for my provider in the UK and charged the phone. Won't recognize carrier, although phone numbers do show.
