Hi,
Can somebody help me here. Ihave the following:
DVDfabdecrytor HD for decryting dvds.
DVD Shrink for decrypting dvd's or shrinking them.
ImgBurn for burning dvd's back to disk etc.
They are all ok if I just want to back up my dvd's onto other blank DVD media.
What if I want to rip my collection to e.g. divx or xvid? Can any of the above software do that or do I need another piece of software?
And also, if I want to reverse the process i.e. transcode from xvid to DVD and burn to disk, do I need a transcoding piece of software or will some of my present software work?
Also, I want to use all free software preferrably!
Thanks.

Can I start by thanking you legends for all the help on this site - you guys have gone to a fair but of trouble to help us n00bs out - often repeating yourselves 15 times on one thread for those of us who cant read good and stuff. nice one guys, cheers.
I have been using dvdshrink and autogk to make 700mb AVI's successfully for a few months (i have even mastered OCR subs with subrip thanks to this site) I added a 750gb HDD last weekend, so my question is this:
I want to back up my 300 odd DVD's to HDD (no burning necessary) I am ok for HDD space right now, I would like a no click backup (like wmp11 does for cd's) that will rip and possibly transcode down to something around 1GB that will look nice playing on a big screen, pref in a format (codec?) that WMC will handle (mainly for when i use xbox or linksys thin clients around the house) Can anyone suggest a good paid or free solution?
No click might be asking a bit much, but always aim high right???
Cheers again for all the great help.

LOL, by "no click" you mean "one click", right?
Well, since the original DVDs have encryption, you need a ripper that can handle that.
The best decrypter/ripper/converter, all in one, is DVDFab Platinum. It is kept up to date with the decryption and has many formats that can convert to:

Thanks Cyprusrom, I downloaded the trial of DVDFab Platinum and it looks so slick I think my g/f could use it! I gave up trying to explain to her how to rip with shrink / autogk - I think she lost me in the "now press the secret f8 button" part about subtitles... :)
The first disk I tested with Fab was one that shrink could not rip & it worked fine - so off to a great start there.
Is there a place to ask dvdfab specific questions on this forum?
I am using the "dvd to generic" mode to get the 1gb avi's and there are a couple of settings I'm not sure about
1 Do you prefer xvid or h264 as your codec?
2 Have you seen much difference in single / double pass?
I am going to rip this one disk with the four different settings to compare the final video for myself - but any guidance from your experience very welcome.
3 Is the free version worth a look considering the 1 click 1gb avi's I am trying to get?
& Thanks 7thSinger - Is there a badge that goes with that?

The free version(DVDFab HD Decrypter) only does the decrypting/ripping, no conversion.
The reason why DVD Shrink could not rip that particular disc is probably due to the encryption. DVD Shrink has not been updated in ages to handle the newer encryption.
As for the settings...If you encode with Xvid, you will have a better compatibility with players. Xvid will play in standalone Divx certified players, but H.264 is not supported. There are numerous reviews/comparisons(just google Xvid vs H264 or something like that). opinions are different. Some say Xvid is faster. I use 2-pass, as I want to get my files of a certain fixed size; most times I can't see much difference between 1 or 2 pass. Check it yourself, and see what pleases you.
Once the movie is encoded, check the still scenes and the moving/action scenes. If you like it, you go with it.

Just a little note; DvdFab Platinum is going up in cost as of May 8th, 2008. If you dig it, best buy it quick. It comes with lifetime updates.

It's a quote from the 1948 Humphrey Bogart classic film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The original quote is badges, but the man saying it was mexican. I was attempting to imply the accent.

Yet another classic from before our times. If you haven't seen The Treasure of the Sierra Madre it's worth checking out. Then you'd understand why i wrote batches instead of badges. ;D
