this is from pspmod.com

In this guide I will show you how to play UMD backups reguardless of the firmware requirement.

Why does this work? Well, we are tricking your firmware into thinking that this game requires a lower firmware version.

Example: Playing Gods of War: Chains of Olympus (requires 3.80 firmware) on my current firmware which is 3.52 m33-4

Physical Requirements:

- A psp capable of playing ISO backups (recommended: cfw)
- A umd game that has your firmware requirement or below
- The game you want to play that requires a higher firmware.

Software Requirements:

- Anyway to get your umds backed up to your pc (recommended: USB_SSS)
- UMDgen

Process:

- What you have to do is rip both games to your pc, and open the one that is playable (your firmware or less) into UMDgen and extract the file named "PARAM.SFO" in the PSP_GAME folder.

- Now, open up the game that requires higher firmware in UMDgen, locate the same file that we just extracted "PARAM.SFO" in the PSP_GAME directory. All you do is drag and drop the one we extracted from the playable firmware, into the window of the higher required firmware game.

- Save the iso put it onto your memory stick in the ISO folder on the root of your memory stick, and presto! Your firmware now bypasses the firmware requirement and you can play your new backed up games on your PSP without having to update.

Notes:

Of course, ripping all the UMDs you buy I'm sure can be a pain but I'm sure some people will get use out of this

This is something I figured out, I'm not quite sure if it's known well or not.. If it is and there is a guide like this out there already, oh well :/

thanks to pspmod and luke671 for point this out
