I just built a htpc and I put a ati 2600xt in it, which as hdmi output on it. I plan on connecting my pc to a 32" 1080p toshiba lcd to watch blu-ray movies. My question is, if I play an SD DVD on my pc and watch in on my lcd through the hdmi, will the dvd be upconverted to 1080p? I have the same question about watching a dvd on my xbox 360 and using a vga cable, will that upconvert also?

I guess all that depends on whether or not your video card supports upconversion. Didn't you research the card before you bought it?

I assume you are talking about the HD DVD addon? If so, yes it will upscale over VGA.

after doing some google searching I found my answer, yes. If I watch a standard dvd on my pc and set my vid card to output in 1080p to my 1080p lcd, then the video will automatically be upscaled to 1080p resolution. The quality of the upconversion depends on your hardware and software.

No, Im talking about watching a dvd just on the 360, not on the add-on.

I'm very curious about this also. I'd like to rip my "purchased" DVDs to a PC sitting under my set for my music and Videos only. I would like to up-sample to 1080P from my Hard drive(s). Can this be done?
Things I need to discover:
1) What would be the best program to rip the DVDs to large HDs?
2) I'm thinking of using Linux, so I'm looking for Media Center like software for Movie selection/playback.
3)what vid card or other card would be best (needed) to up-sample to 1080P?
I have the OPPO 980 DVD player. It's awesome! But I'd rather buy the disk, rip it to a drive and then put it in storage and play the movie from the drive.
