I bought a spindle from an online store a few years ago and they didn't have media codes back then, but I checked the media code when I received it and from the media code I could tell that the company making the DVDs was different from what was stated on the site (they had no brand name on them).
Now I'm looking at some Verbatim DL DVDs on the same site and now they do have media codes. Should I trust that this is the real deal?
I know that even with the real media codes, they could still be fakes...

The reason I'm paranoid is also because they put:
Advanced Azo / Metal Azo
When it should be Advanced Metal Azo

Faking a media code is one thing - faking a wrapper would be something else.
I can't see a legitimate on line retailer handling that kind of product.
However there are varied opinions on these disks inasmuch as some are made in Singapore, others in India.
On the other hand, if they are burned with a top line program like 'IMGBurn' there may be no reason for concern.

Ahh, I have heard that the media from this site are made in Singapore. So I've read some more on this.. but seems mkm001 can be either MII or MIS so I don't really know anything.

I was looking for made in Taiwan preferably, but maybe this specific media isn't made there.

Thanks for your reply.

Advanced AZO,Metal AZO,and Advanced Metal AZO are usually the same. The were mixed up with the older 4x and 8x media and confused a lot of peeps. This is back in the day when verbatim had Data Life,Data life Plus,Media Life, and Digital Movie quality discs to choose from. Majority of those in the plus format were MCC.The few that weren't, Ricohjpn. All in all, very good stuff. I rank the older +8x MCC-003 as one of the best.

I'd only stick with Made in Taiwan for -R/+R format Verbatim. On DL verbatim, only the Made in Singapore.

Lightscribe-Verbatim only.

It's hard to figure out country of origin on the web stores. Locally, easier at Bestbuy and Office max when you can read the label yourself.

The last batch of Staple's playo's yielded MCC media, but most likely fakes. These didn't perform very well.

On the web: search the reputatable sites like Meritline.com,rima.com,newegg.com and supermediastore. When I purchase from the web,it's from those sites. Taiyo Yuden would be the best bet. Usually cheaper than verbatim, especially the dash format.

Indian Verbs are running amok and I've heard a lot more negative feedback about them, especially in the newer packaging..That's another reason I'd get the ty's on the web.

Taiyo Yuden also uses the same Advanced Metal AZO dye, just like Verbatim. But,fake tys run amok as well.Another reason to stick with the web stores that I mentioned.

I already knew about MCC but I didn't know TY used advanced metal azo as well..
I also got some TDK TTH02 from that site and it's crap. I'm guessing it's made in Hong Kong.

I am looking at those sites you suggested now.

Thank you.

TDK Media: That's one brand to be weary of. I see a lot of nero burn logs. The top 2 MID codes that's listed in those burn logs is TTH and Cmags.

If you want some good prices on dash format and shiny surface is no biggie, check out the shiny lacquers/silver thermals. They can be had for a very good price for the Taiyo Yuden. I've purchased taiyo yudens this way for 20 cents each in the past.

Check rima, meritline, and supermediastore regularly. One may be cheaper one day,but not the next.Look for the free shipping, which is a huge factor these days.

Thanks, but I read meritline and supermediastore are run by the same company, and that they sell B-grade media. Of course, this might not apply to their Taiyo Yuden media...

I'm pretty sure the two stores are not the same. They compete against each other; if they were the same company, where is the sense in that?

They don't sell "B-Grade" media. You can buy B-Grade media from them if you like, but you can also get Verbs and TYs.

Don't be fooled by the "B" grade Tys. In fact, most tys you find in the USA is the "B" grade. The "A" grade taiyo yudens are over in Japan. Just like this listing from ebay, and note the price difference between the 25 cent "B" grade Ty-G02 and the much pricier "A" Ty-G02:
