Hi I purchased this adapter http://www.byteccusa.com/product/adapter/BT-200/BT-200.htm
for my 3.5" hard drive which I use for my Playstation 2. When I first plugged it in, the add hardware manager popped up and said that it could perform faster speed using USB 2.0 which I don't have but apparently this device is backwards compatible.
I didn't see the hard drive under My Computer but I did see it in my Winhiip program hard drive directory so I tried to transfer a game... It was transferring at .9mb/s and would have taken 2 hours to complete so I removed it "safely" and re attached it to see if maybe re-establishing the connection would fix things. Now my computer does not recognize it period. with Windows Xp this is supposed to be a driver less installation unless installed on Win98.
I tried a few reboots and that didn't work. I plugged in my USB pen drive and it works fine so the USB port is working properly.

Any ideas what could be the problem here? I searched the manufacturers website and I found little information.

I forgot to mention that this harddrive is formatted for the PS2 but works flawlessly when I connect it to an IDE ribbon.

Ok Let me update. The IDE connector is not as wide as a standard IDE ribbon so I lined up the pins wrong. This is a poor design if you ask me. This connector even fits upside down. Any way I got it connected once again and Winhiip recognizes it but yet its still not listed as a removable storage device or hard drive disk. The transfer rate through Winhiip is still very sluggish. I would still like to see this hard drive on the list. Do you think that it's not showing up because it's formatted for the PS2?

As for the connector being small, it looks like full size to me, assuming you got it the right way round and actually plugged the 3.5" bit in. It doesn't look like a product that screams quality though, so it may be a dodgy connection somewhere that's defaulting the USB to 1.1 speed.

no it doesnt scream quality

there are alot of adaptors on the market that just dont work

if you open a external harddrive what do you find inside? a harddrive and a circuit board belonging to the enclosure. Between the usb and the harddrive there is no circuit board inbetween on your device.

i'm no electronic engineer but i suspect that device as made in china

Let me update. I don't have USB 2.0 and this is why I'm getting 1 mb/s speeds with WInhiip. I just read somewhere that Winhiip will transfer games faster with IDE than any other type of connection. So I'm returning this adapter and purchasing a mobile rack for my harddrive instead.
I don't know what transfer speeds to expect using this adapter and USB 2.0 but at 40mb/s using IDE it's fast enough for me than having to buy a USB 2.0 card which I have no room for.

Ah right, I see. Sorry, since USB2 has been around for 5 years plus I tend to make the mistake of thinking everybody has it.

My motherboard is an MSI K7T266 Pro2. At the time I had the option to get the usb 2.0 version but I thought I didn't need it.

At the time I had three options for this motherboard. The basic model which is what I have, a model that supported Raid, and a model that supported both Raid and USB 2.0.
