I followed the instructions on creating a static IP. But its not working. I create the static IP with portforward.com instructions, i change my network properties etc.. I cannot connect to the internet after that.
I have a westell modem with bellsouth fast access ISP.
Everytime i try to set up for static, i loose connection and have to reset the modem to factory defaults and start over.
Oh and I went into the modem and changed my IP settings to match those in my internet settings, still didnt work.
Another question i had was, why does my default gateway, DNS server address and DHCP all have the same IP?
Because when I enter the two DNS addresses to use in the network properties it throws an error because the second one has to be different. Not sure what to do there.
Sorry about all the questions, ive been searching for the past 2 weeks and i cant find why this isnt working.
I think bellsouth will insist (like most isp's) that you use DHCP on their network...static ip is for internal (inside your router) networks with a lot of machines, so you keep your individual settings with regards to the router and which ip it allows special application ports to be accessed from.) As most routers assign ip by mac number unless there are more machines in your home network than there are available ip's it makes no difference as any particular machine will always be assigned the same ip. How many people have more than 255 pc's at home? Not a problem ;) (n.b: most domestic routers assign either the first 40 or the last 40 available ip's by default.. this can be changed)
Bellsouth will enforce DHCP otherwise you will have ip conflicts with other users sometimes when you shut off and reconnect later, depending on whether your ip lease has expired in the meantime.. they will not let you to set static for that reason.. you MUST request an IP from their servers or connection will be refused...
DNS.. you can use any other provider... or even a machine on your own network... that matters not so long as if it is your hardware it doesn't leak to the outside.. (I run my own because my isp are spying on dns lookup requests)
You shouldn't need to port forward through a modem direct connected to one pc..only if it is a combined router/modem do you need to go down that road.. Problems of closed ports are more likely bellsouth playing games with p2p traffic (they use sandvine) and the windows firewall blocking your program..
So this is what i am understanding. I cannot use this IP: 192.168.2.136 (it was generated using the portforward.com staticIP generator) therefore I must call up my ISP and request a static IP?
I tried calling them waaay back when and they would not give me one.
In any case, the most recent news is i joined openDNS.com and used these 2 DNS addresses here:
Primary: 208.67.222.222
Secondary: 208.67.220.220
I plugged those into my router just like openDNS.com instructions told me to.
I dont know if i should go into my westell modem settings and plug those in there too. I would still need a static IP address if i want to use those DNS addresses.
Internet still works, thats a good sign.
At this point, what do i need to do? The whole point of all this is to fix my NAT error in azureus.
From start to finish this is what i did:
I generated a static IP 192.168.2.136 from portforward.com
If you entered the info in the proper Local Area Connection at Network Connections, your static address is configured properly and needs to be used in port forwarding your router following the guide at PortForward for your router and Azureus. If you had only a modem, as stated, a static address wouldn't be necessary. You can check it ipconfig/all and it should have changed to the one you set. You can find your proper DNS server (s) on the status page of your router, I think but those at OpenDNS work well. If you find it (them), you can use it (them), only one is neceessary. The Default Gateway is fine and the only other change you need to make is, in case, your modem contains a firewall, it will need port forwarding as well. Check at PortForward for it as well. You don't call your ISP to request a static address, generating one is fine but you could use the one you saw at ipconfig/all also. The NAT error in Azureus would be due to the ISP throttling torrents and beyond your control. I don't know but I believe Azureus can be set to different levels of Protocol Encryption (may only be for a certain ISP), also downloading at off peak times may help (overnight). Also, make sure to set Azureus as an exception in any firewall you use including Windows Firewall.
