Ok so I have 2 questions

First: I bought a blackberry pearl 8130 because everyone said it was a good phone and since it is a smart phone it does a whole lot more but everything I have done so far I was able to do on my old phone so is there any programs I should get?

Second: What advantages does unlocking a cell have other than being able to use the phone on any network
