I've just ripped 4 'Lost' episodes from a DVD using 'ImToo DVD Ripper Platinum 4', each to a DivX/AVI of 395 MB each. The quality is very poor when compared to episodes I have downloaded that are 350 MB each. What is a good program I can use to rip DVD's to excellent quality DivX/AVI?

I don't convert much, but the FairUse Wizard made me some excellent quality 500 MB AVIs(of a regular 1 1/2 hr movie).
Whatever you use, don't pay money for any program, not when there are tons off excellent freeware available.

A while ago, the full version was available for free. It allows more control and options. Check the site from time to time, might be available for free again later.
I use it with Divx(there is a free version available for download), and most times I set the codec to "insane quality". It is slower conversion, but very good results even for small size files(500 MB).

Older versions of WinAVI are utterly atrocious, not sure whether i'd trust any newer versions personally, in fact you're the only person i've read about giving WinAVI a positive comment...

I have use Winavi in the days when I had to convert all the RMVB videos, and i used it to convert a few AVIs to DVD also(not anymore, since I got me a delicious XBOX:~)!
Anyway, the times that Winavi worked, it worked "okay" converting to DVD. The quality wasn't the best(DVD Flick's conversions are crisp, beautiful, by far better than Winavi). The later version, 8,can burn in subtitles, and as a converter is pretty fast, and can use outside codecs.By the way, there is no official version 9, the latest is version 8. People that use version 9 have probably acquired it from "sources". Version 9 is nothing but version 8 with different, custom skin.
Never used it to convert a DVD to AVI. It can use third party codecs if installed, so I guess Winavi would act just as a GUI for whatever codec you decide to use. Just out of curiosity I'll do the same movie that I had done with Fairuse Wizard.
I think i can give it a positive comment, but definitely can't call it the "best quality ripper". it is too unstable, unreliable. For example, you try to put 3 videos on the same DVD, you tell it to make one DVD with 3 titles add menu, and the silly thing makes 3 separate DVDs.

Pros: It uninstalled without any problems
Cons: I takes an hour an a half to render and when it's all done there's a tag over the video telling you to buy the full version. I realize they need to make money but I really wish they would have warned me before I waited.

That smells like spammo to me:~)!
About the fairuse crashing...it did the same on one of my machines. It was some codec conflict. i re-installed them.
