Using iMac as a monitor?

My iMac recently broke (the old one, the one that is still completely white, forgot which generation that is) and I would still like to use it as a standalone monitor that I can connect via DVI/VGA to a computer. Is there any way to do that?

P.S. For those interested, the repair shops tell me its due to a broken capacitor on the mainboard. Instead of replacing the capacitor the only option they give me is that I have to order a new mainboard which costs as much as buying a new iMac.
