I am so glad Afterdawn has a mac section!! If anyone can answer questions its Afterdawn . I just got an used G-5, my first mac. The superdrive was changed out to a cd/rw, the seller is going to give me a cd/rw dvd drive. He said he doesn't think it is a dvd burner just a drive. Can I use a normal(pc) dvd burner ( i have a sony sitting here)? I noticed the power and the ide cable looks the same. I dont want to just try it, I spent too much on a used machine, that I am not familiar with yet.
thank you

Hi Kurt,

Not sure about Sony, but I don't know why you can't just suck it and see. Try having a look at the databases at www.xlr8yourmac.com - a website that all Mac users should consult anyway. I've personally been using Pioneer dvd burners for several years under Mac OS X and have no problems either booting or burning from any software program as they're fully supported. Just make sure you have the jumpers on the right settings and you're away. I also favour putting a DVD burner into an external enclosure to save wear and tear on the stock DVD burner in my Mac, plus you can then use it on pretty much any machine that takes your pick in the future.

Jolly lad

I'll take a look there and see, did go ahead and put it in and the mac saw it told me what it was (model# etc.) but keeps sticking the tray out. this is happening with or without a disk in it? on apple.com discussions I found someone with the same issue on a new installed pioneer drive . (firmware?) drive for pc? everyone keeps telling him to remove the dust bezel which he stated in the start of the thread he removed. if it is on there it wont open. i even took my drive out to make sure nothing was hitting the eject button and it still opens no matter what you do. cables are secure and master pins jumpered. I looked at a BigBox store and found no drives that said mac supported on them so next to go by the local mac reseller and get a pioneer and see what happens.
