I've searched about this but basically the only information I can find is that it is illegal to circumvent DVD copy protection.
Question: Is the act of circumventing DVD copy protection illegal or is simply possessing copies of DVDs that have had copy protection removed illegal?
What if the original DVDs were also once in the possession of the person but have since been lost, damaged, etc?
it is illegal to circumvent the protection on the dvd... once you've finished and have copied it to a blank disk your in the clear as long as you can prove you own or have owned the movie (if the original disk is lost, broken, etc.) so pretty much unless they walk in the door and your ripping the movie its not illegal, but that law also infringes on other laws so it is under alot of scrutiny...
so as long as you own the original dvd your all set as long as its for your own private use and your not selling them...
quite honestly... as long as your not making and selling 5000 disks a day, you have nothing to worry about... just keep them for yourself and feel free to ask if your having issues.
What if you can't prove that you owned the movie? Obviously it would be quite hard to prove that you owned a movie if you had lost it and don't keep receits (like most people.) It seems to defeat the purpose of backups in the first place.

i'm unsure of any sites on that topic, you can try googleing it... but the general opinion of everyone is that as long as its for personal use and not for profit that there's no problems (of course that is also just opinion) if you don't feel right backing up a movie, then don't... or you can wait for someone else's opinion on here or another site.

once you have circumventing DVD copy protection you have broke the law reguardless if you have the original disk! that is how they look at it, the {riaa}
