On one of my other computers I had a problem with no sound, so I tried to do a system restore using the disks. After they both were done installing I got a message saying "Your system has detected a config. error (Code Purple)" If someone could help me on this I would be very thankful, and pay you. Thanks for your time.

I could use more details, but I'll take a few guesses here. First, you most likely did a full system recovery from recovery discs or a hard drive partition, rather than XP's built in system restore.

Second, I'll assume it's an HP system OR you are using HP restore discs with a different machine that it was intended for.

There is no true way around Code Purple, other than to use the proper media with the proper system.

Code Purple is tied to HP's old tattoo system, where a string is set either on the motherboard or the hard drive (I forget which, as Toshiba has a similar DMI string setup.) If you replace a hardware component and then go to use your old system recovery discs, typically they would not work, as they were bound to the original hardware. Yeah, I know, that sucks!

There is a utility to recreate the motherboard tattoo, and I once had the CD for it, but it's a very complicated tool, that if used improperly, could render your system more useless than it is now.

You may be forced to send your system to HP for repair. I also happen to know the Geek Squad can fix this symptom as well, but they have to send it away to a repair center, since they do not have the tools in store. The cost and turn around time for both situations is probably not worth it in the long run, especially for an older machine.
