Booting Linux for the first time help

I installed linux today through wubi 8.04 and am having a problem
After the installation I rebooted and was given the choice of either booting
in XP or Ubuntu.
I choose Ubuntu, it does its little loading thing but takes me to a screen that
pretty much says this:
Programs included are free
Ubuntu comes with no warrenty
To access official Ubuntu documentation please visit hxxp://help.ubuntu.com/
At the bottom I have:
ubuntu@ubuntu:(little swirly mark)$
Then thats it. It just sits there. Ive tried typing many things. No idea what to do. Believe Ive tried everything. A thousand thank yous ahead of time.

Did you try booting the disc itself as opposed to that wubi installer? You should be able to boot from the disc itself and see if you have the same problem (you might need to play with your BIOS, but there is a chance it is already set up). If you can boot from the cd itself, you know if it is some part of your computer that doesn't like some Ubuntu default setting, or if it is more to do with the installer.
Another idea: type in "dmesg | tail" or "sudo dmesg | tail" and give us that information, it might be able to tell whether something has crashed, or maybe an xorg log file.
If you haven't already, be sure to back everything up! All too easy to make one small mistake when playing around with OS installation, not a good feeling when you just realise that you shouldn't have hit enter and you lose lots of data permanently...

Xserver isn't starting. It's really common with that wubi installer.
Try typing startx and report what happens.

Giving up
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104) unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno3) Server error
I have Ubuntu v8.03 but decided on installing wubi just so that I could run both XP and Ubuntu on one drive. Figured once I get the hang of it I would switch over. I am in the process of backing up my files
in case I never get Wubi to run Ubuntu correctly.
Hope some of this helps with any future replies.

You can have a go at configuring X
Try this and see if it works. It may be that somewhere, somehow x hasn't detected your graphics hardware properly.

The output from dmesg | tail is showing that your ethernet connection isn't configured properly.. I don't think it's a driver problem.. ubuntu hardware support is fantastic... but that can wait until x is working and you have a desktop ;)

So I did try that but ultimately decided to uninstall and then reinstall ubuntu.
I also partitioned my hard drive for 30 Gb free space and labeled it
I:Linux
When I reinstalled Ubuntu it reinstalled on that drive.
After installing I reboot (my pc says shutting down for 20 minutes and then i unplug). Upon reboot it asks me if i want to boot xp or ubuntu. I choose ubuntu.
I then get this error:
find--set-root--ignore-floppies /ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.1st
Error 15: File Not Found
So I rebooted went into windows setup, deselected my supposed floppy drive, rebooted, and same error.
I googled the error but i cant make sense of it. Ill keep looking of course. Thanks again for any further help.

????? can't find bootloader, probably because of that drive label or something. Grub on any normal linux system is located at /boot/grub/menu.lst and normally on dev/hda1
Only time I ever tried that wubi installer I binned it because it caused all this kind of crap. I never dual boot systems.
You will have to bite the bullet and go to the ubuntu forums. They make this broken crap.. it's up to them to solve it ;)

I did a Wubi install just to see how it works. Installed with no problems and all things seem to work OK. Because Windows NTFS file system is so flaky, I always do a defrag before I install large files. Wubi creates a very large folder. Mine was 15 GB... think I could have made it more like 8 GB, but at the time didn't really care.
Just to let everyone know... a regular hard drive install of Ubuntu is best. Wubi is an easy install for Windows users new to Ubuntu.... more or less a Demo hard drive install.

I tried a quick install on xp using the wubi installer..
First time no x no start, but I fixed it by editing some files... not exactly novice stuff. xorg wizard didn't detect graphics hardware.. manually adding the type and location didn't work either.. It was down to the hard method of manually building the kernel graphics module then ensuring it loaded on boot. (rcS.d/modules and the like)
I deleted the folder and tried again... second time it worked straight out of the box :: go figure??
I think the wubi installer is a little hit and miss at the moment. I did find the second time that I had closed down all xp's odd background processes first
That may help.. so close down everything that may be running.. chat stuff, email listening things. You don't want windows deciding to do something during the install.
