Name of Game All of them (so far just tried GH, GH 80's & Custom
Game Region NTSC
Media Make Imation DVD+R & Sony Accucore DVD-R
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed 16x
Speed of Burning 2x, 2.4x, 4x, 12x, "Max" (Tried a few obviously)
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6 + slide tool
PS2 Version SCPH-50001
Game acquired original disc & downloads
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software N/A
Burning Software DVD Decrypter

Problem: I keep getting the red screen of death (insert PS or PS2 formatted disc) after swapping the discs. Here is exactly what I do.

Creating the disc (will use a downloaded as example)
I open DVD Decrypter & select ISO Write mode
I open the downloaded ISO file
I select the write speed (tried several) & leave all the other defaults as is
I burn

Loading the Disc
I start the PS2 with the SM disc & get to the Load Program screen.
I use the slide tool to open the tray.
I place the burned disc in the tray, close it & lock it with the slide tool.
I get the error, "Not a valid PS2 disc".

I've also done this...
I start the PS2 with the SM disc & get to the Load Program screen
Use the slide tool to open
Place a retail GH1 disc in & press the load button on the console (the screen says load bigger TOC & then REFRESH TOC)
Now the screen says to insert my backup disc
I open the tray again using the slide tool & place the burned disc in the tray.
I close the tray & lock it with the slide tool
I Press X (and I've tried the special boot) to Load Program
This is when I usually get the RSOD

I've tested the SM with the retail GH disc to make sure I was taking the correct steps to use the SM slide tool & have gotten GH to load just fine. This makes me feel like the media is bad (i hope that's all it is). I noticed this morning my Sony Accucore DVD-R's are made in Malysia & have seen that the general consensus is to go with DVD-R's made in Japan. However, I've also seen people who've used Accucore DVD-R's have success. I feel really incompetent & apologize if I'm missing something really obvious.

Thank you very much in advance.

Very nice info! Great job! You don't know how many users just say "help backups dont work. wut do I do????"

Try using different media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I recommend the discs that have a max speed of 8x. Then get your .iso ready and use ImgBurn to burn the .iso at 4X speed.

Thanks for the quick response. See, I did read the rules & noob stuff before posting. I know how frustrating it can be to be asked the same question over & over & over again.

Few follow up questions.

My burner is a Lite-On DH-20A4P-04. Would that have any positive or negative impact? I just bought it b/c my Sony DRU-510 is well..... the model speaks for itself.

I'll go pick up some Verbatims or Taiyo Yudens tomorrow after work. Does it matter if it's DVD+R or DVD-R? I've seen mixed answers depending on the PS2 model. I'm assuming I need to look for ones made from Japan.

Is ImgBurn the preferred app to use now over DVD Decrypter, and should I set the booktype specifically to DVD-ROM just to be on the safe side?

Could you help me better understand the whole MDS file? I have seen RAR's that unpackage with MDS files & then just standalone ISO's without. Then of course I see on DVD Decrypter & "Create DVD/MDS" file. I've Googled it but haven't gotten an explanation that "sticks" quite yet.

Hope these aren't too lengthy or basic. I just want to learn how this works & the best way to get this stuff done. No spoonfeeding.

Again,thank you very much.

I could ring Kerry Wood's neck today. :-|

Yes Imgburn is the preferred app as its newer than DVD decrypter.
In your model probably better to use DVD-R
You only need to change Booktype to DVD-ROM is using DVD+R

Your questions are fine, and I too commend you on your fine post. Wish more would read first, and then give as much info as you have.

I burned my Guitar Hero to Verbatim DVD-R and it works fine with my Swap Magic and Memento.
My Guitar Hero 2 I have problems loading it for some reason.

And Guitar Hero III works great for me and also burned on Verbatim DVD-R

Now on Maxconsoles I read a thread about a patch for the Guitar Hero II and Guitar Hero 80's encore.

But I don't know what controller you are using and if this indeed does make a difference.

Just wanted to let ya'll know that I tried burning with the Sony DVD-R's using ImgBurn (2x) last night just to see if using ImgBurn made THAT big of a difference. Heck yeah it does! everything worked PERFECTLY! The 2x burns work flawlessly but the 4x burns just did the blank screen when trying to load. No biggie. I'm still going to go with your suggestions to use the better media just b/c I'm not trying to wear out the laser in just one weekend (HA!!).

Thanks guys for the quick & very informative responses. You've all helped me out so much!

Have a great weekend!

Glad it worked out for you.

For the most part 4x speed is the way to go, but not always.
There are some games that are an exception to the rule.

And Guitar Hero can be one of those exceptions, plus the PS2 can be an exception also depending upon the version. Some like certain disc better than others.

I have used Sony DVD-R lots and no problems.
Nothing wrong with them.
