I recently purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder. This week, my local Officemax is offering $6 trade in credit on ink cartridges with a purchase. I stopped by today and saw that they have 100packs of 16x DVD-Rs (orange box made in India) and 100packs of 16x DVD+R (purple box made in Taiwan) for $24.99. I've read that made in Japan is the best, but difficult to find in mass market stores. I'm a newbie when it comes to brands of blank DVD's, since I've never used thm. I just know to stay away from generic and off-brands. All I will use these for is to record tv shows on my dvd player. They will not be used in the computer. I just don't want any coasters. Should I get DVD-R or DVD+R? Will these Verbatim's suffice for my general recording needs?

My verbs are made in Taiwan and they have never failed me to date....I also recommend burning at a slow speed of 4x....max 6X...I use the -R format but that's just my choice as my DVD recorder will only accept this format
You cant get much better than Verbatim...IMHO

The MII (made in India) is usually Moser Baer and are in the junk range.
To be sure now a days I go on line and buy MI Japan Taiyo Yudens. Of the highest quality.

Thanks for the info. I wrote down the info on the DVD-R made in India, since I had never heard of any electronics being made in India. It says Verbatim #95102 0705-211 DVD-R Ver 2.1 16x-speed Rev6.0 Verbatim Corp 2007 A Mitsubishi-Kagaku Media Company.

Like any company, Verbatim farms out their work with their specs. Previously Verbatim had some of the tightest specs in the industry. That all changed with the products from India. Now the made in Singapore is the good stuff from verbatim. Unless dual layer +R discs, I stick with Taiyo Yudens from Japan.

As mentioned I have always used the Verbs from taiwan...they code out as MCC...Mitsubishi Chemical Company and have always had great success but as stated beware of the Indian Verbs...more than likely MBI.

You will not be disappointed..as mentioned Taiyo Yudens are by far the superior disc but value wise I prefer and use the Verbs.

As to this question I would check with the recorder manual to see what it recommends...mine wont even look at the +R's

i used to use many, many Indian Verbs a few years ago (8x ones), never had problems with them. I see Verbatim are now using India again. I just bought quite a few hundred 16x Verbs recently, many of which are Indians, the rest are Taiwanese, have used quite a lot of both sorts, no problems so far, not even with the Indians

I've had very minor experience with the MII's Verbies...but most of it was ok.
I've stuck with the MIT's or the MIJ Taiyo Yuden, that way there's no worry.
