I'm new to HDTVs having just recently acquired one (Toshiba 47HL167) in the past couple days. After tweaking the settings on the TV I am amazed with the quality I get. I've only been having a couple small issues.

When attaching my computer via VGA cable, I'm only able to get a 4:3 display even when playing 16:9 DivX video or DVDs. It has black bars on both sides as well as top/bottom. I can "stretch" it but it truly looks stretched, then. So far, based on my research (and supposed resolutions), I'm stuck with that... unless anyone has any ideas.

My main reason for posting is when I hook up my Progressive DVD player via Component (or composite.. which is what I originally had before I bought the new cable) the TV says it's getting 4:3. The movie will play "widescreen" but letterboxed on both sides, top, and bottom. I know it could be re-sized without messing up the aspect ratio but haven't found a way. I used the THX System Checker on a star wars DVD and the tests all showed things as correct (squares were squares, circles were circles, etc), but it's just the top/bottom/left/right bars that bug me a bit. Do you need a special DVD player to output 16:9 video? I previously understood that my progressive player should.

Any tips on this or am I stuck this way?

Has the DVD player been set up to output to a 16:9 TV?
