I have heard time and time again that putting those blank labels from the printer on a DVD will mess up the disk and possibly even a player, unlike CD-R's which they work fine on (i have many audio cd backups with adhesive labels)
The only alternative i know of is a special printer that etches the actual disk, but i dont wanna have to buy a special printer like that.. so has any company made any product for a label for DVD's that are ok? something i could run through a standard laserjet printer?
its just that my handwriting sucks and i like my backup collection too look neat and uniform, but my sharpie writing leaves a lot to be desired
Some people have no issues with sticker labels. It's the 1st thing to look at when a drive has issues with those sticker labeled backups.
Lots of players and drives give warnings about using them, and even voiding the warranty.
Another route, would be with polyester sticker labels. These are said to be more resilient with the heating/cooling down that discs go through.
These are very pricey and sometimes be double the price of your backup when compared to inkjet printable media.Make sure you get a good application tool to keep it centered and pucker-free.
Lightscribe is still inferior to inkjet printable media,if you're looking for quality covers.
Casio makes a thermal printer, but just basic letting/numbering so they're not too fancy. You're still talking about the $80+ range. There may be some other thermals out there that are better.
Best bet would be searching Ebay for the Epson R200/220/300/320/or 340. You should be able to find a lightly used epson for under $100. With these printers, the set of 6 ink carts could be bought for under $10 and saved me a ton of money. Now sets are running about $20 per set because of the epson lawsuit,UGGH!!!! 2 yrs ago, they were under $6 per set!!!!! There's some awesome inkjet printable media out there, like the Ty Watershields:
I think people should be made aware of the problems with epson printers and some of the workrounds. My epson r265 is still an unused hunk of junk because it will ONLY use original epson inks.. regardless of the claims made by the makers of the copies. I can't afford £49 every couple of weeks for ink for what was a £60 printer.. I cut an ink cartridge open and 60% of it was dividers and empty space that could have been used for ink... Nice print quality.. horribly expensive to run......stuff epson!!
That one doesn't have to be hooked to a computer to work.
I bought this one on sale at Staples a couple years ago for $39.00 Casio CW-50 CD Title Printer.Warninng the ribbons are not cheap for the Casio's back then you could get them for around $4.50 each at Sam's Club now they are going for around $6.00 to $ 7.00 each online.
