I have 2 mkv files of movie Unforgiven (1992). One in 720p and the other in 1080p. The specifications of 720p are:

Size: 6.55 GB (Video size around 6 GB)
Bitrate: 6535 kbps
Resolution: 1280 x 544

and those of 1080p:

Size: 8.5 GB (Video size around 8 GB)
Bitrate: 7713 kbps
Resolution: 1920 x 816

Which one should i keep ? The 720p has better image quality (bitrate vs resolution) and the 1080p has better resolution.
Since going from 720p to 1080p we have a 2.25 times pixel increase we expect the same increase in the bitrate in order to have same image quality. In the above videos we have only a 1.2 times bitrate increase. That's why i think the 720p video is of better quality.
Am i right ?

Thanks

I guess so.

I would play them both from your computer and see the difference in quality. The make your desicion. You can find many mkv players such as VLC Media PLayer to testout your videos. Try to find a difference in the quality of the video. If you cant decide I would try to keep both of them, and store them in an external hd.

Dear edge2000

The 1080p file looks worse in my laptop but i think this is normal because the monitor can't support the 1920 x 816 resolution. Also i don't have a HD TV to test it. I just want to decide which one is the best and get rid of the other, to free the space in the disk.

My screen supports 1920 X 816

Find some way to send the files to me fast, and I could test them for you. Keep the 1080p if you cant decide. 1080p will become the standard resolution. Even though the 720 bitrate is less, I think that the difference will be hard to notice. Bigger resolution is always better.

Think of some way to send a 8 gig file~~~~I dont think you can send it as a full file, only in parts.

I dont think there is some simple way to lessen the bitrate. I have a ps3 and can try to get the files to play there. Use DVD Shrink and compact your mkv files. I never used DVD shrink, but I think it also encodes your files to vob.

To keep it simple - keep the 1080p.
If you also want to keep another file I can store it.
