To get 5.1 surround, you must have a sound card that supports it. Otherwise, it's just something coming from all the speakers, and not 5.1 surround. If you're using a mic input, it sounds like your sound card doesn't support 5.1 surround.
Also, your software dvd player must support Dolby Digital and DTS. I don't know what they're calling high definition audio. Maybe something similar to the new high definition radios, and radio stations, which aren't in 5.1, that I know of. Not sure about the HDMI part of the question.

The specs of your laptop doesn't say anything about a sound card......
It should be a decent video card though. The Logitech speakers are nice too. I have the 5300e speakers myself (Logitech's THX speakers).
Other than get a good 5.1 sound card, I don't know what else to say. Send HP an email, and ask them. See what they have to say about it.

I have the same sort of HP laptop... The HD audio only works on the speakers built in, meaning that if you download an HD audio or video file it will play it in full quality (or at least as in as high of a quality as the laptop speakers are capable of). You can't hook up a 5.1 surround system with out the proper card being in the computer. The Realtek HD Audio built in remixes any HD audio into stereo and then uses matrix encoding to give you a virtual surround sound. I may be wrong on that but that's how it works I'm pretty sure of. Try calling HP or use their online Tech Support Chat feature to be sure.

I honestly have no clue on the HDMI port as mine doesn't have one. As far as I know HDMI is for audio and video, say you wanted to hook your laptop upto your new 50" lcd tv to use as a monitor... So I highly doubt that you be able to get pure audio out of it... Plus HDMI has a type of DRM in it the prohibits it from usage outside of certified devices... Sorry, but I doubt your going to be able to get 5.1 audio out of your laptop unless you hook it up to a tv via HDMI then audio out from the tv...

That's not going to work either. If you get the tv to pass the audio that way at all, it will be downmixed to 2.0. Most tvs won't piggy back connections that way at all.
From what engage16 said earlier, it sounds like the best you'll get is simulated surround, which is normally Dolby Pro Logic. But I don't think what you'll get is even that. To get true 5.1 surround, you need a sound card that supports it.

Are there any 5.1 capable sound card i can hook up on my expansion port?
I heard there are even usb sound card ones or something. Please shed some light. Thanks for the helpful replies ;)
