Hi folks,

Done a bit searching and quite surprised not many if any reviews, guides or pages here on external hard drives.

Ideally i would like a plug and go external hard drive with a lightscribe dvd writer (so i dont have to get a separate one of these) but i aint seen anything like this. So i am considering an ext hard drive, 500 or 750gb that is reliable, quick and rated.

Any advice recommendations welcome.

my pc is ( about 5yrs old) Amd Sempron 2400+ 1.66GHz, 1.00GB of Ram

i don't think they make external hard drives with dvd drives with them. go for an internal dvd burner over an external version as it is faster.

Thanks for your reply.

I didnt think they had made such a combi device yet going by my initial searches but was not certain. I wasn't aware that external dvd drives were slower than the interior ones so thats helped to clear that matter for the future.

So i can compare the differences in external hard drives, how do i know if i have a sata or usb 2.0 installed on my pc ?

look for enhanced usb controller under universal serial bus controllers in device manager. your motherboard most likely does not have sata on it but check your user guide or motherboard manual.

thanks again ddp

Yep i have Ata not Sata.

Looking at my device manager it appears i have enhanced usb, so i presume i am safe in purchasing USB 2.0 EXT HD.

The maxtor external hard drives are fast and reliable. I have been using my 750 gig for around 3 years now and had absolutely no problems. I connect it using a firewire which I found faster than usb. Maxtor Onetouch III or 4.
