I had a real bad virus that put my machine out of commision totally.
After i reinstalled everything things pretty much went back to basics. Re instal everything and blah blah.

Anyway to cut a long story short......... everytime i try to open C:/ by double clicking on it. It asks me what program i would like to open it with??

None of the programs on the computer open the f*&!%ng C:/ meaning i cant access my important stuff.

Any help is MORE THAN APPRECIATED!

Can you right click on the C: drive and select "Explore" and successfully view and navigate your drive?

Unfortunately no!

Still says what program do you want to open it with!

Also the same for "open" if you right click then try "open"

After some googling, it appears that the most common, possibly the only cause for this is a virus. The virus in question creates a autorun.inf file in the C: drive. Try this program from I found at Download.com. It looks like the program was made to fix the exact kind of problem you are having. Give it a shot and let me know.

That's an uncommon nasty.. Any idea of a name for it?

I have seen it once or twice in 5 years.. My solution was to run active@killdisk (free version) and then partition the drive sensibly.
As people should know by now just formatting a drive doesn't actually get rid of the data.

A specific virus isn't listed, it appears that it's multiple viruses that do this. And that although the virus may or may not still be on the system that deleting the autorun.inf allows the user to again gain access to their harddrives.

PeaInAPod (you after dawn addict)

Thank you for your help.

I run the specified program and now i can access my drives agaain. C/ D now run perfectly. I have a fealing after i run the virus scan it deleted system files that needed to open the drives (?)

Whatever it was the nastiest virus i have come across, it crippled my machine and infected all drives including the computer memory. I had to re do everything. Im still not sure if everything is back to normal. I bought Avast professional and it done a fair job so far.......... except for constanly making me crazy with the noises it makes when im infected!

I personally recommend and use the free version of Avira AntiVir, it is quite capable. I would recommend using it after your subscription to Avast(which is also quite capable I might add) has finished. To clear things up let me explain how the virus works. Essentially it creates a file called autorun.inf on your C: drive/hard drives in general. This file more than likely pointed to the location of the virus and a possibly some other files. SO everytime you booted your PC the autorun.inf would be launched and it would know to launch the virus because of the info inside the .inf file. But the virus must have been removed from your system and after that everytime you went to open your C: drive the autorun.inf didn't know what to do since the virus was gone so it would ask you "What program would you like to open it with?". So by removing the autorun.inf file you removed what was causing that window to pop up. In all reality even though it was a headache it's actually good that the window popped up because it means you got rid of the virus.
