VGA carries analog RGB along with H and V syncs. While it may be possible to output on VGA a high definition resolution, the bandwidth required to do so makes the cable less than ideal. This is why you see computers and other boxes connected to televisions as analog component video YPbPr or digital (DVI or HDMI).

Like the other guy said, yes you can use it for HD signals. I would actually use a set of component cables or an HDMI cable though. You will get better color reproduction out of those IMO. Colors look washed out to me with VGA.

Also you will probably find that the VGA connections on your HDTV will not accept a 1920 x 1080i HD movie resolution.
The input would probably accept 1280 x 1024 at the highest or one of the other VESA resolutions such as 800 x 600 or 1280 x 768.

PC Specs: CPU-C2D E8400, M/B-P5N-E SLI, RAM 4Gig OCZ Platinum rev2 ,VGA- Nvidia 8800GT 512MB, HDD- Hitachi Deskstar SATAII 1TB, 250Gig Maxtor IDE HDD.
Corsair HX520 PSU, Liteon Lightscribe DVD Writer, Pioneer BluRay drive.

also, too add, Sky+ isnt full HD (1920x1080)
as it is mentioned somewhere here, if your sky box was full HD you would need something like dvi (you should be ok with single link DVI- anything above e.g D-Cinema 2048x1080 you would need dual link DVI). AS it is your TV is doing "number crunching" a crude explanation is that is receiving your signal thru your VGA from your box and is outputting a decent enough picture for you. It is correct (as stated) that your RGB out of your box would be better than a composite signal- in most cases.
