I have read somewhere that it's possible to have download speeds over 1000 KB/s regularly, but this person said he was registered with a private tracker. I have a 20 MB/s connection, I use uTorrent, and I have followed the speed maxing guide. I am downloading a 1.17 GB torrent right now and these are my numbers: Seeds 44(199), Peers 45 (647), D/L Speed ~190 KB/s, U/L Speed ~490 KB/s. I got this torrent from thepiratebay. Do private trackers make that much of a difference?
Yes, seeds on private sites have to keep their upload speeds high in order to maintain a proper ratio, you have no way of knowing what seeds upload speeds are on public sites, usually very low. Plus you want a higher ratio of seeds to peers on either, you're over 3-1 the other way. For comparison, my connection is 3 MB and I get speeds of 350 KB, good enough for me but I wouldn't mind your upload speed.
Make a few sites favorites and check often and eventually their registrations will open. Google torrent invites or something, some sites may allow invites, I don't know and Demonoid used to be open on a certain day each week,someone may know if it still is.
