Problems getting Cucusoft to convert widescreen avi w/o stretching

(Converting to mp4) I just bought the Cucusoft ipod-video converter.
When I load the widescreen avi video in Cucusoft the preview looks fine with black bars above and below. But when I start the conversion it insists on making it fullscreen, distorting the picture. The only setting I could find that sounded like it would help is in the video options where a choice is 'keep original size'. It doesn't do any good though.
I like to use the ipod tv-3 setting but all the ratio's seem to be full screen.
How can I convert the avi video to mp4 and have it look proper?
