recently installed ATI diamond hd 2600 xt 512mb graphics card, pci-e
and 430watt power supply by thermaltake.

system specs:
amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 2.29 ghz
2.0 gb of ram
350 gb hd
windows xp sp3
downloaded all drivers, checked temps, all seem to be around 50-60 degrees celcius.

Computer runs great in xp, everytime I try to play, rainbow six vegas, after about 5-10 minutes the game freezes and computer immediately re-boots. I tested this in f.e.a.r. and it did the same thing. So i know its not a problem with the game. I checked the bios and it has the graphics card i just installed. I figured it may be a power problem, but I looked on the power supply calculator and it showed I could run the system fine with 430watts. all drivers are brand new, I even installed the old ones to make sure, it seems to last longer on those, but it still crashed. Could be a temp problem, maybe the processor in the card is running too hot, many reviews on this card have said it gets really hot. Any ideas would be great, anyone know the problem?

Checking the temperature of the GPU would be wise - you can do that using ATITool or Rivatuner. However, this is a known bug with most catalyst driver releases, try different versions to see if you can cure it.

thanks man, it probably is over-heating I just installed 2 new case fans, it helped the situation a bit, I was able to play the game longer, but it still crashed, I've decided to just return the card and get a msi geforce 8800 gts 320 mb 320-bit card, the ati apparently wasn't built for gaming, and I wanted a more on the gaming side card.

That's not really fair. The 8800GTS 320MB is also an old gen card, it's faster than the 2600XT but has been phased out as a model now, so I hope you didn't pay much for it.

Oh i quite agree, it's not a particularly fast card, but to say it's not for gaming when companies pass off that you can play games with a 6150SE...

well i know what you mean there, but thats a salesman for you.

i know a couple of, now ex, clan mates who bought the 320 gts when it was the best bang for your buck card and they have just picked up second ones to sli them. they are going for £50 is on flea bay and if you work it out as £250 ish for the performance they are getting its not too bad a deal.

to give you some refference they are pulling 16/18k in 3dmark06 with c2ds running from 3.6/4ghz. not too shaby al things considered.

Not too shabby, but 384MB for the GS is moaned about, 320MB is even worse. Plus SLI is really just a 3dmark whore, it doesn't often give benefits that large in the real world.

yea, the ram (or lack of) will cripple them on the higher res settings but from what i have been told the later drivers (17x.xx) really give sli a boost. i think its to do with the 9800gx2 so they have pushed out the boat and optimized them to death.
