If you have a PCI Express x16 slot on your motherboard then look to upgrade your graphics card, it won't run Crysis or Vegas 2 as it is (Even at mininum - i once tried Crysis at minimum with a 7300 LE, it runs at ~20FPS, so there's not much hope). What would your budget be?
PSP, all the way from 1.00 to 5.50 GEN D2 - DS Lite w/ M3DS Real (M3 Sakura v1.34)
PS3 3.01 - iPod Touch 2G 16GB Jailbroken - Xbox 360 60GB - PC, Q6600, 3GB DDR2, GTX260 (216) 896MB

If you're willing to spend a bit of money on your PC then i'd suggest you get an nVidia 8800GT, or an ATI HD3780. As for a new CPU, i'm guessing since you have an AMD at the moment your motherboard wouldn't support an Intel, and without sounding like an Intel fan-boy, AMDs kind of suck... Go for either a 6000+ or a Phenom.

I found out my Motherboard supports:
Socket: AM2
Supports AMD Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, and Sempron processors
Will this Work "AMD ATHLON 64 X2 5600+ CPU Socket AM2 Dual Core"

Yes, it would, it's slightly worse than the 6000+ but it wouldn't bottleneck a good graphics card. The 8600GT is quite a lot worse than the 8800GT (The 3DMark06 score for the 8600GT is ~5,000, whereas the 8800GT is ~12,000) and the price to performance ratio is worse.
Though, if you don't want to spend that much money on a card and are fine running new games at medium settings then it's not that bad. If your budget can stretch then the 8800GT would be the better choice as it will last you longer; you can max settings in present games (I max Crysis (2xAA) and World in Conflict (4xAA) at 1440x900 with a good framerate) so the card should last for the next few years.
Here are some good prices;
