Monitor turns black shorty after log-in

have a Compaq Presario v5000 notebook running XP that is having some start up issues. I'm definitely no beginner and I usually know what I'm doing, but I can't seem to figure this one out. When the computer starts it goes throught the usual Windows and Compaq splash screens and then to the windows log-in screen. After it logs in it starts up for a few seconds and then goes to a black screen with the LCD backlight still on. No buttons work and it seems to be locked up. The power button is lit up, however it will not work. Even holding down the power button doesn't power it off. I need to unplug the wall adapter and take out the battery in order to get it out of this mode. What is weird is that the system boots to Safe Mode perfectly fine. I ran spybot and several others with no luck of finding anything. I tried turning off everything in the start-up and still nothing. It only seems to happen after it has logged in and started loading start-up programs. It is also not the Monitor output as pressing this button does not effect it. I have also tried a new user profile along with many other things and none of them worked.

I decided to reformat the computer as it seemed to be a software issue, not hardware. I reformatted it and everything seemed fine. I started doing updates and after my first reboot it happened again. I restarted as usual and the next time everything was running fine and I used it for a while that day. I started installing the drivers and it happened during the install. It now is back to the same way it used to be: works fine in safe mode, does it shortly after log-in in regular mode. This made me think its driver related. Also I did all the updates to windows including SP3, which I now think may have something to do with it also. Other than that, I am lost. Any help?
