I want to start by saying Im kinda new at networking. Ive always been able to get by with running the wizard and its never went beyond that. But one of my machine (running xp pro) doesnt seem to want to network. I can access the other machines on my network with it, but those machines cant access it, Im sure its something simple. Any suggestions? thanks

go to start/run and type the ip address of the computer you want to access.

eaxample:

start/run \\192.168.1.100

try that. Also make sure they are all on the same workgroup.

Edit* im retarded :P

how do I find out what the workgroup is of my computer? (sorry for the stupid question)
when I type 192.168.0.101 into the run window (which is my comps ip according to run/cmd/ipconfig) I get this msg

"Windows cannot find '192.168.0.101'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search."

one more thing I wanted to add is, I can see this computer listed within my other computers network connections but when I double click it I get "unable to connect"

to find your workgroup go to control panel/system/computer name and you should see in the middle of the page named "Workgroup"

make sure you put the \\ in front of your ip.

In my last post my slashes were wrong.

so type this in the run box \\192.168.0.101

Again, make sure the workgroups are the same on the computers your trying to connect to.

If you need step by step on how to set this up just ask.

well my other computer appears to be toast so I cant check with the method you told me (start/run \\192.168.1.100). another computer that I do have is a macbook so Im not sure how to do that with a mac as Im kind of new. The main reason I want this computer to be part of my home network is I have a modded xbox I use as a media streamer. Im not sure what Im doing wrong here with this computer but the odd thing is the network troubleshooter wont work so I cant even use that root. please help, sorry I took so long to respond but like I said I was trying to get the other computer up and running, Im going to repost this thread if I dont get a response soon as I want this resolved asap.

thanks
