I once bought an OEM DKU-710A. The computer now says it is a DW-D22A BYS2.

When I try to use the 710 firmware update, it is rejected, stating that it is not the right drive basically - the 710 updater sees it as a D22A. When I run the firmware update for the D22A, it is rejected, stating that the computer is not approved for the update. SONY first directed me to the D22A firmware update, then on a subsequent chat told me that they do not support the drive because it is OEM so it is someone else's problem.

SONY will never again be my problem if I can help it, for I won't buy from these clowns anymore, but in the meantime, with all the posts about this unit I have looked at, I still can't figure out what to do. Can this have it's firmware upgraded? I don't care if I have to employ some form of hack and void a warranty, I have no intention of doing business with those SONY jerks again. They appear to have the old "We are IBM and you are not, so screw off" attitude, so as far as SONY is concerned, I am simply going to screw off. What jerks.

Supporting SONY is like supporting terrorism.

You haven't said what problem you are having with the drive. Is there a reason you feel obligated to update the FW?

Bought a pack of Memorex 16x DVD recently and regardless of speed, the drive simply does not recognize the disk. What a PITA.

Memorex is junk, and it would appear that your OEM drive may be, too.

If it won't take a firmware update, pull it out, and install a new drive. They are very inexpensive now.

You said that you already tried to flash it, with new firmware. Your burner didn't take it. The burner is junk.

I find that some creative folks will sometimes be able to cross flash other firmware that is either custom designed or modified and hoped that someone reading this board might be acquainted with these techniques. I apologize for taking your time, and appreciate all the thoughtful advice you have taken the time to provide.
