Wont allow me to take ownership of my drive?

Hi folks, My external HD's been denieing me access and it turns out it was because i needed to take ownership so i did the following(windows xp home)=

restart in safe mood
right click file
properties-security tab-click ok when security message apears-advanced-owner tab-click administrator,click ok-

When i get to this point a message apears=

An error has occured applying security information\??ll:lfamily

dont know what else to do?Its a maxtor 500gb with over 300 gbs of info i mcant afford to lose.

Please help.x
