I was thinking of buying a laptop from a friend and would like to put my extra DVD burner in it. Does regular PC Drives fit into a laptop? Thanks,

Nope,

laptops use special slimline drives.

The only way to use your existing burner with it is to put it in an external box and hot-plug it.

the external box can be USB2 or Firewire (1394) or both, depending on the connections available on the laptop.

If you use USB 1, it will cause problems because USB 1 can only supply 11 Mbps and dvd writing needs a minimum of 14 Mbps approx (single speed).

The benefit of an external box is you can swap it between the laptop and any other pc, the drawbacks are it is bulky and it needs a power supply of some kind.

Hope this helps...

How hard would it be ( if possible) to rip the guts out of a regular drive and fit them in a slim line drive? Can you even buy slimline drives I never seen them
