how do you update a tomtom 300 map?

Help

Does anybody know how to successfully update a tomtom 300 map from its factory installed map to the latest version which I believe is ver 6.75?

I have been told all sorts of different ways but none of them make any sense, and do you need to update via the tomtom software or can you just browse the device via USB?
