Bad idea to only rip the 5.1 audio track for a 2.1 system?

If I only kept the 5.1 track on a rip, and then want to play it on my computer (which only has 2.1) will the system automatically merge both of what should be going to left speakers on a 5.1 system to the single left speaker of the 2.1 system (and the same with the right)? I'm wanting to keep surround sound when I encode the movies, but don't want to lose all the sound that would be going to 3 speakers.

I have always ripped my DVD using the 5.1 audio channel. It always plays great on my computer and my home system. My son doesn't have the a surround system as I do. And his plays just fine. Your system will convert the 5.1 audio channel into stereo if need be. If you have a surround sound system then don't worry about it. it will play just fine!

I more or less thought so, but was worried because many DVDs come with Stereo tracks as well.
