Hi dede36.
Your problem sounds like Smitfraud. Please download Smitfraudfix and run it. Also, boot into safe mode to run both SPybot and AVG.
Best Regards :D
PS: And no, a system restore isn't recommended unless you have completely messed your system up, as the malware has probably infected your system restore files as well.

Hi dede36,
Please try to use just ONE thread??. This one!
Make sure you have the LATEST version of >>> HJT (currently v2.0.2)
The above link will download the HijackThis installer. Run the HijackThis Installer and it will automatically place HJT in C:\ProgramFiles\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. It will also automatically OPEN HJT, close it.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Open the C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis folder in program files. Rename the Hijackthis.exe file to HyJkdede36.exe. This is because some malware can hide from HijackThis.exe. Right click the HijackThis.exe file and choose rename. Click in the title box and press the delete key to clear what?s there, type HyJkdede36.exe and press the enter key. Right click the HyJkdede36.exe file and choose send to desktop(create shortcut).
Under no circumstances should you add any items to the HJT ignore list.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
? Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
? An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
? If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
? Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
? Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
? Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
? Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
? Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
? Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
? Click the Empty Selected button.
? If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
? Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
? Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
? Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
? On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
? On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
? After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
? Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
? A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
? If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
? To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
? Click Close to exit the program.
If you haven?t ran Smidfraudfix as cdavfrew suggested, please do so Now..
Reboot to Normal Mode
Run HijackThis.
Click on ?Do a System Scan and Save Logfile.? After the program is done with the scan, Copy and Paste the Log File to your next post.
Please Post back and let us know how your computer is acting, now..
Please post the Logs from:
HijackThis
SuperAntiSpyware
And Smidtfruadfix ? located at C:\Rapport.txt
I?m sure between all of us here at AD, we?ll be able to help you clean-up???.
By the way dede36, welcome to AfterDawn..

Hmmm... interesting. I have already noted several other cases in which Superantispyware nor Smitfraudfix could fix or detect the problem.
dede36, please download GMER and post a log here. Also, I'm curious about A-squared's (a great antimalware scanner) reaction to this infection, so would you please download the free version and post a scan log here without removing anything.
Best Regards :D

Hey cdavfrew,
Do you think the new bata version of spybot s&d may be able to take care of this problem??
Since it has been blocked in the HOST file as per smidfraudfix:
hosts file corrupted !
127.0.0.1 legal-at-spybot.info
127.0.0.1 www.legal-at-spybot.info
Let?s give it a try.
dede36, here are some instructions to do.
We must repair your HOST file first.
Please download HostXpert >> Here
It?s an exe file that runs from the desktop so, double click on the HostsXpert.exe icon.
At the top in the Left pane click on ?Make Writeable?
Then down a little ways, in the same pane, click on ?Restore MS Hosts File?
At the top now click on ?Make ReadOnly??
Close HostsXpert.
Now, you can download Search & Destroy v1.6.0.25 Beta 1 >>> HERE
Install it and do the Safe Mode thing again. Run Spybot and delete anything it finds
Reboot to Normal Mode.
After that run HijackThis again and post a fresh Log?. Just one this time? LOL
Bear with us dede....
2OG
p.s. do a GMER also like cdavfrew said. We can use it to look deeper if Spybot fails..

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading; The few who learn by observation;
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves...

dede36,
Good job, that cleaned out some trash.
Now follow the instructions I posted before you ran A-squared:
Quote: dede36, here are some instructions to do.
2OG
Go to that post for the links to work..
2OG
p.s. Just stay with My instructions and don't pay any attention to any others. That way you won't get confussed and we can finish as soon as possible.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading; The few who learn by observation;
The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves...

Hi dede36,
This is looking much better..
We will still need to clean up some of the leftover trash from your HJT Log.
So, while I am working on that please make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. copy and paste the contents of that notepad and post it for me to work with while I?m looking over the HJT Log.
Pleeese??.. :]

The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves...
