cheers for the reply IHoe but what i meant was i want to rip the dvd,re encode it to something like avi, xvid and compress it all the while being able to turn the subtitles on and off,if i rip the whole film with out re encoding the files are much too large,if you know of any software that can do that i would be very greatful.cheers
chris
The ripping part maybe able to be handled by dvd shrink or dvd decrypter assuming the movies have the older protection, now as for recoding have a look at mediacoder it's free for personal use & is frequently updated, however i have no idea if it will do what you want it just springs to mind, the only other thing i can think of if your after freebies is the open source community or maybe a linux distro has what you need, there's mythtv just of the top, kinda like ms media centre, yeah a part from that it's just a matter of pot luck & if you manage to find what you're looking for my advice by a lotto ticket :p
Edit: i only mention myth tv as it may have coding ability ?? or not
