PC won't recognize external hdd

I have Windows xp pro w/sp2 computer. I was trying to save an image of my C: drive to a (Iomega 160gb USB2) external drive, using a program called "driveimage xl". I was using driveimage in the drive to drive mode. I got a prompt that if I went ahead with the drive to drive image backup, that the the Iomega would ovewrite whatever was on the Iomega. That was allright because I had already moved everything to a different hdd, so I went ahead and done the backup. I done the backup for about 30 or 40 minutes, then I canceled the backup. Now the Iomega hdd will not show up in "My Computer". It was letter J: but now nothing. Can anyone help me?

By the way, I should also say that when I canceled the backup, I had to unplug, shut the hdd off because the program would not cancel on it's own. That's probably a "no no", if that's the case is there any thing that I can do to make the computer recognized the hdd? As a matter of fact, the more I think about it, the more I know "that sure was stupid" oh well, we learn by our mistakes.

The HDD shows up in Disk Management as Disk 1 149.05GB Unallocated
(my drive that's in question is a Iomega 160GB)
so Windows is showing my drive as "Unallocated"
When I right chick on drive, I only gey 3 choices: New Partition, Properties, and Help.
Is where a way I can assign a Letter for the drive or whatever I need to do so as Windows can recognize it?

Disconnecting USB hdd's from a comp while it's still in use on occasions corrupts it,your lucky your comp still recognises it when it happens to me it usually won't then i have to remove the hdd from the case & shove into the comp as a slave,only then will the comp see it,i then run chkdsk just to make sure all will be fine when it's returned to the ext case,it also pays to uninstall all USB devices in device manager,once rebooted let the comp reinstall them all before connecting the ext drive
ok onto your prob,it's real simple you have to reformat,there is no longer a partition as the partition table is corupted as it was being rewritten when you disconected it,doing the above will not work you will still need to reformat,can't remember if windows lets you assign any drive letter or not,no matter it can be done from comp management as i guess you know,below is a link to a linux help,it can be used to recover data if at anytime you need too assuming windows shit's itself,knoppix & like most other free linux distro's can do it,another utility that works quite well is partition magic, it can on occasions recover deleted partitions tho it has'nt been updated in a while,not sure if acronis has a partition manger or not,finally the 2nd link you will find more than usefull,it's radified they deal specifically with drive imaging & the advice is free

EDIT: I've installed Ubuntu to an extended partition,i've done this so if windows is unable to boot for any reason i still can get into an OS by having grub installed as my primary boot manager which then transfers to xp's manager if i select xp in the OS list,it also means i can ecover data if i need to before reformat or destructive reinstall,if you want to give it a try but decide you want to get rid of linux,you will need either any xp disk,home,prof,or an upgrade,or a recovery console that most branded models have,you then use the repair function to redo the FIXMBR if that does'nt work on reboot use the FIXBOOT command,then windows should boot,you can use a xp prof disk on a xp home computer it will work etc,or install linux to external hdd if your BIOS supports boot from USB or firewire

You need to create a partition, first, then format it. Click on New Partition, and have it create a partition the full size of the drive. Then format it.
You also need to do a little reading about computers, or take a Computer 101 class. What you are asking are basic questions about computers. And, everyone, who uses a computer, has been where you are right now, so it is no big deal.

HP have free lessons that you can subscribe too as does CNet,they also have useful tech emails that have tips & how too's as do the following

PCMechanic
Tech Republic
Join the lot & subscribe to their emails you can then unsubscribe from the emails you don't need,from here on it's trial & error & a whole lotta of reading,google is also a useful tool if you get stuck on a particular issue,most times someones already been there & you'll come across a post & a fix,tho it can take a few searches
Edit: That's not too say you should'nt make topics tho just try search first

It'll take a while & a whole lotta hair pull'n & most importantly trial & error,what i've posted above is how i trained myself the only other advise is always have a backup for everything.you can use the image tool just to create an image file,it's not the same as cloning like you attempted but achieves the same goal,if you cancel it won't corrupt the partition table as it's not creating a partition,instead it is in basic terms is putting data into a folder,no that's wrong more like creating an iso file,you should try the imaging again the only issue is whether or not it will succeed,my comp can't do it to external devices as far as i know,the last time i attempted it with ghost 03 it did'nt work,tho that was way back in 03 & i had only just begun to use imaging software,the software today from symantec & acronis is far superior now,actually i'm gonna have another crack & see if i can boot from an ext device,later in the week

So long as the BIOS supports boot from USB you should be alright,tho it would pay to check it's enabled.I know my first attempt failed because my comp did'nt support USB booting but i think my other comp does tho i have to check when i get around to it
