okay, my question is this. I have a computer that has both a vga port and a dvi port. the dvi port is part of the video graphics card and the vga is the standard port located up higher on the back console. the computer will not read the vga port, though.
Is this because of the dvi port on the video card?
And, How can I get that vga working?

You cant because its a part of the buil in graphics card. you cannot run a plugin card (PCI,AGP,PCI-E) and use the built in card aswell...does the card with the DVI port have two DVI ports?

Yes, you use a DVI to VGA adapter on your graphics card - the VGA card up top is for use with the integrated graphics card, which is why it won't work.

...now, before i go out and buy the wrong one. I need a male dvi to a female vga? which would be the small adapter, right.

Could it possible for me to use a cord version? to make it more convenient. meaning one cord with a male dvi and a male vga. so doesn't stick out as much.

or will it cause me problems?

Well a VGA connector will only fit in a VGA port - it should be pretty obvious which is which though due to the greatly different size of connectors - forcing the plug in the wrong way round could bend the pins in the cable which could be fiddly to put right.

You can get a cheap adapter that screws onto a VGA port and lets you use a DVI monitor.

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 4GHz(20 x 200) 1.5v 3000NB 2000HT, Corsair Hydro H110 w/ 4 x 140mm 1500RPM fans Push/Pull, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5, 8GB(2 x 4GB) G.Skill RipJaws DDR3-1600 @ 1600MHz CL9 1.55v, Gigabyte GTX760 OC 4GB(1170/1700), Corsair 750HX

Indeed, but that cable would also do fine.

I did manage to get a small converter from radio shack about a week ago. I couldn't wait. It works excellent.

I wouldn't originally need it if the damn monitor I had ordered came with a DVI port like the description said it would. But, instead I got a 22" widescreen LCD monitor w/ vga only. 'A little ODD to me.' I never felt like returning it so i just kept it instead.

Thanks everyone for your input. Your advise was a lot of help to me.
This Thread is now 'DONE'.

Actually seeing 22" monitors with only VGA is common, the cheap ones only have VGA.

I never noticed the difference between vga and dvi. Maybe it's because I set my own desktop color settings to begin with. lol

It's night and day on the 2407WFP, it really is. General fuzzy nastiness versus a perfectly crisp, clear picture.

My only VGA monitor is the Sceptre X7g Naga. It generally has very good picture quality, so it's never been an issue with me. If I stick my eye right up to the screen, I can see a difference. But for everyday use, the differences are nil. It is even comparable in games for the most part. The only game I have that's affected by VGA is Call of Duty 4.
