Ok I installed a flip top case cover on my Playstation 2. The power button led is red but when I press it nothing happens. However I can press the eject button and the power comes on. Once it is powered on however I cannot shut it down by holding the top button either. This is a version 5 fat Playstation 2. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Also my power/eject switch is not attached to the top of the case like I have seen in most install tutorials.

the power/eject ribbon cable has nothing to do with the lid, so the wiring has nothing to do with the lid, the only thing to do with the lid is the fact that the lid holds the buttons, and thats it.
you have most likely frayed the wiring, or put a screw through the ribbon cable (the silver wiring leading from the power and eject buttons), open your ps2 immedialtely and check if the ribbon cable is intact, if not, your in trouble, you'll have to open your whole ps2 right down to the motherboard to replace that ribbon cabling

Back from my long absence(again). I thought I'd add in to this topic, as I've been given 2 fat PlayStation 2s to repair. I have a Version 7 sitting next to me now. I'm having the same problem as Rustyf7, but the PlayStation 2 refuses to power on despite there being electricity passing through it(the red LED's lit). However, I've noticed that depending on how I tilt the Power/Eject assembly, the LED turns off. Is this a damaged ribbon cable or a broken Power/Eject assembly(the ribbon cable is not torn, but it looks like it's been squeezed somewhere).

Well, it sounds like the wire inside the ribbon cable is touching another wire inside it, if so, youll have to replace the ribbon cable
All the wires in the ribbon cabling shud be parellel to each other, if the ribbon cable has been squashed, bent, torn, etcc..., the wires become unparallel, which means somewhere along the cable, 2 wires or more are touching, i think there is 7 wires/pins in that ribbon cable, (2 for red, blue, and green led lights), (1 for power switch), (1 for eject switch), (1 for negative (power)), (2 for motherboard control)
One of those 2 lighting (red led, blue led), wires may be close to touching another wire, and when you tilt the console, it touches another wire, and therefore the red led light turns off.
Dont be fooled, if the red led comes on, that doesnt mean that the ribbon cable is ok, that is just an led remember.
What you cud do is try repairing the ribbon cabling yourself:
http://www.gearhack.com/Forums/DisplayCo...on_Cable_Repair
However, ive done this before and it is very delicate, (i made a mess of it), your best bet is to contact a company or even sony and try and get another ribbon cable, it will cost you about 5 pound sterlings, ill try and get a link 4 u

Here is the link, i recommend you buy it quick:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-PS2-Power-Rese...p3286.m14.l1318

It says its only for v9-11 ps2's, but it will work, the only thing which will not work is the bottom blue led, but that doesnt matter, version 0-8 ribbon cables are extremely rare

EDIT: found a v4-8 ribbon c.:

You know, I was actually thinking... since some of the pins on the ends of the ribbon cable are exposed, I may be able to solder wires from the end that plugs into the motherboard to the end that plugs into the Power/Eject module. I'm sure that would work, but if you have something against it, just tell me.

of course you cant do that.
ribbon cables have special resistance, (i think its 75ohms), flowing through them
And a high max voltage, (60volts)
Also, the current flowing through the ribbon cable is proportional to its resistance, so any ups and downs in the current, and you cud blow a fuse

Well, so much for that. Know of any Canadian retailers that sell the ribbon cable?
