The cooling fan in my tower is sounding like an airplane. My sweet hubby took it apart and blew the dust out...however the fan is still making noise.

My question: Is there something else we can do to make the sound go away? Or are we destined to replace the fan?

Do we just "buy" a fan? Or do we have to take the old fan in to show them what we need.

Darling hubby is computer literate enough to do this...I'm NOT...so glad I have him around! lol

Any help anyone can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Marilyn

The bearing is proabaly worn out, you could try some light machine oil for lubrication, that would keep it quiet for a little while, but the noise will just come back. I would just go buy a new fan.
Take the old one in, so you can match up the size.

which fan is it as in cpu fan, case fan, videocard fan or power supply fan? does the noise go away after a while or always there? the fan probably needs to be lubricated with 3in1 oil or light weight grease. have relubed a number of psu, case, videocard & cpu fans so if what to know how then ask after you answer my 1st 2 questions.

Oh my! Thank you so much for your quick responses!

FIrst...it is the case fan that is making all the racket.

Second...no it continually makes the noise. Sometimes it is louder than at other times...but to me it sounds like it is about to DIE!

I backed up my files just in case....lol

Giggles,

I would suggest just to go out and buy a new one, When they start to die there's not much you can really do with them.
Oiling or greasing the fan would only be a bandaid fix, it'll just start making the noise again.

And your more than welcome. :-)

Icanbe...thanks again for your quick response!

Guess I will have to get a new fan...guess thats better than replacing the whole tower. ummmm, do you have a ball park figure of what the cost might be? Sometimes I feel a little taken advantage of when I go to purchase things and the salesperson knows I know diddly about what I'm trying to buy. I end up buying what they recommend and later someone tells me...oh, you didn't need all that! Sigh! (smiling still the same)

Giggles!

You should be able to pick one up for less than $15 I would think...

I'd take your old one in to a brick and mortar store and so that you know you are getting the same size as a replacement.
